Nothing explains a keeper at no. 2

Just for absolute clarity -

1 - Goalkeeper, no-one else
2 - Right-back. At a stretch, a right-sided centre-back if you're playing with a back three
3 - Left-back. At a stretch, a left-sided centre-back if you're playing with a back three

4 - Defensive midfielder or right-sided centre-back

5 - Centre-back, no-one else

6 - Defensive midfielder or left-sided centre-back

7 - Right winger, no-one else

8 - Central midfielder

9 - BIG MAN UP TOP

10 - Little man partnering the big man, or midfield maverick who doesn't track back

11 - Left-winger

All of the above are 100% set in stone, and if any player takes a number and doesn't fit the above conditions he needs to be absolutely world class.

People who can wear numbers outside the above conditions -

4 - Nwankwo Kanu, in fact, scrap that, nobody.

5 - Zinedine Zidane

7 - Eric Cantona

8 - Chris Waddle

Sod this.

It's about time squad players got weirder.

I want to see someone wearing a 99 shirt in my lifetime at Hillsborough, like 90's Italian football.

So you're happy that a goalie is gonna wear number 2? Fletcher at 6 is as random as Milan Baros at 5 them all them years ago

What does it matter if he wears 2, 22 or 222?  It's a number?  Squad numbers haven't related to positions like in the good old days for years.

Perhaps it's the players choice.. superstitious bunch.. have a good season wearing a certain squad number then they may wish to keep it.. my lucky number is 33 (smashed the roulette table a few times with that number)

Watch out Wallace.. when they sign me, you're gonna have to change! ;-)

Richard Evans was the first person to wear number 40 for us.

My reaction was similar to that of a 1930s Yorkshireman finding out his son was gay. Utterly scandalised.

We don't do that round here.

I don't think it matters that much Kivo...

Number's irrelevant, doesn't change the player in the shirt

I'm just going to remain as bemused and confused as ever as to why we've gone quite so far out there with it. I'd be interested to know the reasoning/logic
