He's Ripped The Heart Out Of The Squad

Recommended Posts

Another poor OP written in hindsight, ignoring the realities of the situation.

Don't know why people feel the need to write these. Doesn't matter though whether they're fickle, attention seeking or what. It's a good reflection of how a lot of our fans are bouncing themselves off the walls right now and having a go at anyone who is in the firing line. While praising the merits of those who aren't.

The OP has obviously ignored the fact that the main concern at the beginning of the season - when we started with 8 of the L1 squad - was the defence letting in 2 goals a game, even against L1 opposition. He ignores the fact that 2 of our defenders got injured and had to be replaced. He ignores the fact that we needed someone to boss the defence and midfield.

He ignores the fact that our strikers weren't performing, with the exception of Rodri in his first game and the possible exception of COG, who disappointed in even measure. (It was a big step forward for COG last night, but that's another story).

He ignores the fact that Semedo and at first Antonio have both struggled in this league.

All in order to have a go at Jones, previously 18 matches unbeaten, who has dealt with the above not ignored them.

In hindsight, it's not a poor OP. It's simply disgraceful.

and my friend you seem to forget that while our 'Inept' squad was letting in 8 goals in our first 4 games we kept busy hammering in 12 at the other end. There was a need to tighten things up little but the radical nature in the way that this was attempted eroded team spirit significantly.

COG has done brilliantly throughout all this, yet we all know his first level par game will see him on the bench. This would be OK if it were applied across the board.

It should n't matter who wears the shirt but for the mild mannered Mr Jones it does, he has an Ego the size of a mountain.

But the next game after the Birmingham game was Millwall, and there was only one change - Madine in for O'Grady (old for old).

And the next league game after that was Crystal Palace which was the same starting 11 as Birmingham but for Jones coming in at left back for Reda, which was an enforced change due to injury (but in any case, old for old).

thats the crux though the fight and passion were missing during the losess if we had maintained that through the last 6 games lost it could have had a big bearing on the results, and yes it could have gone the other way , but to rip the spine from the team at one go is a big ask ,and results did show it was a bad decission at the time ,

Just looked at the line-ups that Dj has fielded so far this season.

First few games when we were doing well, we had 7 or 8 players from last seasons squad in the starting line up. Since the Palace game it has been dropping rapidly to an average of 4. For me that is the heart of the problem.

Despite what DJ said about keeping team spirit intact, he has destroyed it by freezing last seasons players out. Wouldn't be in the least surprised if there isn't currently a split dressing room.

Whether or not tonight's result has a positive impact on team morale remains to be seen. DJ has tried to move too far too quickly possibly because his ego was bruised by Megson's comment a few weeks ago that "It's still my team"

Do you think the moving too quickly side is maybe the pressure that exists from above or the fans though? If he'd signed no-one in the summer we'd be up in arms.....only had to look at the threads that where on here to see how much clamour there was for new players because some considered what we had was not good enough.

I still think the team is in transition phase, we have the right playing personal it's just a question of getting the right balance and of course one or two of the signings are probably not as good as we would have hoped.

Taylor will be good for us.....I honestly believe that and the partnership he can build if given the chance with Gardner will prove to be one of the best centre half pairings in the league.....as good on the pitch as it is on paper in other words. I do agree that maybe team spirit has dipped a little but maybe disagree that it's causing a split in the dressing room after all players will not be going out onto the pitch and not performing just because they are in support of a mate.,,,it's not how football works.

What's needed is what we've had for the last 2 games, unchanged team and eradicating the mistakes.....albeit last night was not the best example :)

That's what will build team spirit nothing else.

Doesn't really sound the right way to rectify a poor defence by swapping out the guys who were firing in 12 goals does it mate? Not to us foreigners anyway...I think the same topic is being roasted to death. Perhaps time for an Owlstalk poll? I still find it hard to believe that the commentators against the Birmingham and Fulham games were truly shocked by what Division 1 Sheffield Wednesday were producing at this level. Then the changes started. There are those that will recall injuries as the need for changes and those that will say it was right to have an almost wholesale clearout - oh and those that say radio commentators are lobbers - just like the overseas supporters who even take time to participate in the forum.

I think the squad needed supplementing, but with players being introduced to the team more slowly.

It would seem that a number of the signings are letting DJ down by simply not performing and whilst it will take some players time to settle down, I would have expected more from some of the Championship experienced players he has brought in, even if they're new to the club.

I was surprised to see specialist players like Lee ignored for right back and other non-specialists played in that position. The surprise was only greater when Lee came in and did a good job. Given the injury situation, I expected us to bring in a short term loan at right back particularly given the shambles we have been and continue to be defensively.

Having 2 young players in central midfield with little Championship experience rings alarm bells for me. I think you can play one of them but it seems we are crying out for an experienced midfield general to exert some authority and purpose in our midfield.

Bottom line is that (as we all know), we can't keep shipping 2 or 3 goals and making dreadful mistakes at the back every game - otherwise we won't be picking up many points. In all honesty, I would have expected by now to start seeing some more imposing performances from our back 4, but it's not happening, the mistakes are continuing and something needs to be done in that back line as a matter of priority. I'm surprised with DJ's experience that we're persisting with something that is broken - and with his experience, he should know how to fix it and in double quick time.
