Popular Post Lord Snooty
Weather to match the mood. You find me here, your humble correspondant in a state of shame. For I have broken a lifetimes constraint on this particular call, and for the first time called for a manager to go. And yes, I do feel shame. I do. For I have trodden those steps. Walked in those shoes, and know how difficult it is when you are in there. And having done that, you don't want to call people out. For it's a stressful enough job as it is without the hoardes at your back and the faceless assasins firing at across you boughs from the dark shadows of the internet. I also know that when you are in there you can get cabin fever. That you can be so desperate to do well that you become inward looking. That is to say, it becomes harder and harder to take a step back and look at what's happening as a whole. The siege mentality strikes, but not in the positive. You start burrowing and finding yourself edging your shoulders down the same tunnels. The same traps. With your back to the wall you put the barricades up. And in doing so...restrict your own vision of the problems. You are the master of all you survey. But you survey less and less. Twisting the square pegs, hoping they'll eventually fit in the holes. You become blinded to things which in the cold light of day you would see at the first blink in the distance. But you cannot, because you are intombed in the mausoleum of your own construct. Filling the holes sealing the door to keep the negativity at bay, to keep the critisims away from the group. But in doing so...starve yourself of the oxygen of ideas in a crypt of self and group preservation which is almost certainly the doom of you all. It's an awful place. But as the crowds gather and it starts to become futile it doesn't make you throw in the towel as many might imagine, no, it only makes you more desperate to succede. And desperate it the word. One more throw of the dice...something of wild abandon. A wild card...something totally different that might unlock what potential you see but can't quite untap. You want a dynamite of an idea..something that is Sh*t or bust, throwing it all up in the air, the runes of fate and seeing if they land on an answer that you had been blind to. Yes, that's what you feel like trying... But you don't. You don't. No. Because as desperate as it becomes...you still you cling...a lifetimes experience nudges you at you. Still in the darkness of desperation, while you want to fire a flare of ignition.... there is the self protection valve limply pumping the final truth through your tactical mind, that there must be in there a conventional answer. There has to be the simple truth. And so ....you do neither. You end up not doing something dramatic and random , the final desperate act looking for solution nor go to the simplest of rules . But instead opt for half way house. A final half hearted roll of the dice. Neither going out with a bang nor clinging with hope to a staid conformity but choosing the limp b*stard son of neither...putting players in random slots hoping for some magic , missng alchemy...but also to keep it tight and rigid and not take chances...play percentages... and .throwing the centre half up front for the last ten minutes... Though of course. Monk can't even do that as we haven't got any! I feel bad calling for him because of all that. Becasue It's easy for us to sit out here in TV and internet land. Discussing teams we'd select. The teams we'd select never lose do they? No. Because they never play. They're undefeatable figments of our minds. Images imagined like perfect blueprints. The players perfect sculptures hewn from indestructable marble. The players in our fantasy teams never go off injured. Or find out their wives are putting it about and giving them mental distraction. Ours are played out on paper. The perfect teams. But the managers team , his are made real men. Of flesh and bone. Of human weakness of muscle and mind. Fatigue of thigh and of brain. Our fantasy teams never get a bent referee because there is no refereee. Our imagined substitutes always come on and score the winner in our minds eye. His subs have to face sturdier obstacles than an empty goal in an imaginary ground. "It's easy this managment game" So yes. I feel shame for calling for his head. I feel guilt and inside my belly a baleful shadow moves, and makes me uncomfortable. And I know why it makes me uncomfortable. Because I've been there. And when you have recognise the 1000 yard stare across the field , you recognise the rings under the eyes of the tired man, giving his all, having sleepness nights, with the nightshirt stuck to the back in clammy sweat. Blinking into the dark until the sun peaks over the distant horizon to bring another day of plotting and picking and trying to put the pieces together. And knowing this, at no other time would I usually call for a manager head. But this isn't any other time. This is here and now. This is Covid-19 , 2020 , minus 12 points, financial oblivion trapdoor to the the third division season and it's gaping jaws are masticating before the final swallow. And so I stand by my words of the other night. I think we need a change. And I don't like to say it. And even now..until we do. If , indeed we do. I'll still hope he latches onto a successful combination. Succesful tactics to suit the group. I hope, I do, that he does turn it around and makes my calls look like the shoutings of a know nothing. Because if he does then it means Wednesday are safe. And that's all I want. All any of us want. The Wednesday safe. Wycombe Wanderers vs Sheffield Wednesday Saturday 31st October 2020 k.o. 3pm Adams Park Ref: Keith Stroud (Apps: 5 ,Yellows: 8 , Reds: 0) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------- Wednesday return to Adams Park almost nine years to the day since our last visit, hoping to avoid a Halloween horror show against an improving Wycombe who sit one place above us in the table and coming off the back of a 3-0 defeat away to Rotherham United Gareth Ainsworth's men earned a reward for a succession of decent performances, by taking a point off Watford on Tuesday and will be thinking it's a great time to be playing us as they look for their first win. Wycombe will hope that their extra day's rest will give them an edge, with Wednesday also suffering from a number of enforced absentees, particularly at the back. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------- TEAM NEWS Wycombe Wanderers Gareth Ainsworth has remained positive despite his side's poor form, and will hope that the point gained in the week can be used as a springboard to launch their season. Wycombe haven't tasted victory in their four previous encounters with the Owls – losing 2-1 and drawing 1-1 in their 2003-04 meetings - but will hope to end that sequence by collecting their first ever Championship win following a succession of positive performances. With no new injuries, Ainsworth's men are growing in strength with Uche Ikpeazu recently returning to the side and Dominic Gape, Jason McCarthy and Ryan Tafazolli all taking part in training. With those developments in mind, Ainsworth will most likely stick with the same lineup that started last time out. Wycombe possible: Allsopp Grimmer Knight Stewart Jacobsen Onyedinma Thompson Adeniran Mehmeti Kashket Wheeler -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------- WEDNESDAY Garry Monk continues to face heightened pressure for the Wednesday fans as the temptation to panic starts to become apparent, given the team's dip in form. Since Monk challenged his side to wipe out the points deficit that they face, results have gone from bad to worse and though there is a long season ahead, Monk will be targeting this game as the one that can restart their season. Following this fixture, the Owls face two tough home fixtures as they welcome Bournemouth and then Millwall. Wednesday lost centre-backs Aden Flint and Tom Lees to an injury and red card respectively in midweek, meaning neither will feature at Adams Park, leaving them with one fit recognised central defender. Liam Palmer and Julian Borner could make an unlikely centre-half pairing with the possibility of Monk reverting to a back four, given his depleted backline. Monk should perhapd consider a recall for Jordan Rhodes after he scored a hat-trick for Norwich at Adams park in 2018, five goals for Huddersfield in a 6-0 rout at Adams Park in 2012, one for Huddersfield two years earlier and even one for Brentford in 2009. Wednesday: Wildsmith Odubajo Palmer Borner Penney Harris Pelupessy Bannan Reach Paterson Rhodes -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------- COME ON WEDNESDAY 24 16
beswetherick
WELL LET ME TELL YOU THIS LORD SNOOTY... get yourself and Stubbs down to the Helmet for one last hurrah and order every single pork scratching in sight because I’ve a bad feeling we’ll all be needing a few “substantial meals” if the other night is anything to go by... I live in eternal hope, Bes. We have to , it's all we have. Hope that we stick an eleven out. An eleven who all know what their jobs jobs. And eleven of round pegs in round holes. And eleven with the mental fortitude to forget Wednesday night and take it to the chairboys and put them to the sword. I hope. I don't envisage it happening. But I hope. If not. I'll be off for a slurp down the helmet... 1

Weshallovercome
Brilliant Snoots, I'm also a late comer to the 'Monk out' party, so desperately wanted him to succeed, because we needed him to, but it's time. He's not had the best of luck with the injuries, but his record has become indefensible

But ? Are we down ? No WAWAW UTO & DTB Breeze home today all the threes. Three points, three goals, & Free beers. Come on Wednesday ! Flat Owl
Pragmatic OMDT Snoots. Can’t see beyond a one dimensional 0 - 0 or even a loss due to a mistake. But hey, we were reyt good until two games ago according to our Garry, who seems to have forgotten that since January, he has created a bunch of fretless fretters that lurch from one calamity to the next. Really looking forward to how he sets us up to deal with that athletic mobile youth they have up front.... I predict there will be 5 hanging off him as a Dawson parry rebounds off his ample arris into a gaping goal. BRING ON THE CLOWNS..

Holmowl
I’m a simple being. I just want one thing at 3pm today. I want to see Harris on the right, and Reach on the left. What is it that Monk sees in having WBs on their weaker foot? They havent created a thing off their wrong foot for over a year. It can’t be their defending - only a fool would play a left-footer at RB and a right-footer at LB. Oh, and Rhodes.
VictoryBell
Well, Snoots, that was a bit grim! Personally, I think we'll get the points, today. I just don't feel we will do any less against a team that comes from a (no doubt, splendid) place that sounds like it should be the setting for a scene in "Matthew Hopkin: Witchfinder General". Quite appropriate for Hallowe'en, I suppose! Come on, Wednesday! UTO

WindygrOWLer
Very sombre......but needed to be as the last couple of results have been vvank and unacceptable. Not just Monks fault though, we need to see fight and spirit from the players too...
