Midfield beast

It’s been apparent since the Hull play off we’ve needed a beast to sit in front of the back four. Silly figures were branded about.

Why not Iorfa?

He’s been great at CB, he really has but he does often worry me there. It’s been brought up when discussed with friends that he’s not a great passer. But put Bannan & Luongo in front of him and he doesn’t need to play inch perfect passes,  break up the play and give it to those who can pick a pass. He’s also great at bringing the ball out with those direct runs out of the back.

Food for thought?

With the squad we’ll have left, we should play him up front with Rhodes. Unless Ashley uses his contacts to get someone in.

Iorfa may make a decent centre half given time, but I really struggle to see him playing in midfield.  I don’t mind seeing midfield players converting to defenders but (big generalisation) I just don’t think defenders moving further forward tends to work.  Even as a holding midfield player I would expect better distribution than Iorfa can provide.

You may jest, but Iorfa scored 3 goals in his first 7 appearances for the club; the same as Rhodes managed in his first 23 (and last 16).

Because his awareness, passing ability and touch aren’t good enough???

I’ve been recommending Iorfa as our new Warhurst for some time now DJ

There's a lot of tackling and breaking up play involved in playing that role.

If Hutch would go into his 50/50's on his feet rather than sliding in on his arse, 1 - he wouldn't pick up as many injuries and 2 - when he's won the ball cleanly, he's still upright and in a position to actually use the ball he's won.

Kieran Lee was originally a right back when we got him from Oldham. Warhurst played in defence and was a revolution when he moved up front.

Keep seeing people say we need a midfield ‘beast’.

Theres not many of them about these days.

What we need is players to fit the system we play. Our centre midfielders don’t really suit playing 4-4-2, that’s been the main problem.

I did say it was a big generalisation so will be exceptions to every rule.  Lee has a good football brain and learnt his trade well at Manchester United so the quality was there.  Also, I think he started off playing midfield, but competition at Old Trafford was pretty fierce.  As for Warhurst, playing up front worked for a short period but I always felt that was a hot streak that wouldn’t last - still believe his best position was centre back.

You can say that again.

Depends if you ask Monk or someone who knows what there talking about. Hutch has been brilliant and key for us over the years and particularly this season until Christmas !
