What are the tactics?

Recommended Posts

After some appalling performances, can anyone point to what we are aiming to do, what is the game plan?

We play long ball, that's obvious. But where are the tactics?

Allardyce plays long ball, but it's organised and effective. The ball is played up, and the midfield presses to gather the second ball or knockdown to gain ground.

Our midfielders drop deep for an easy ball from the defender, and the ball is instead hit long to a lone striker who has no support because the midfielders are on the half way line.

Is it Monk who just picks a side and sends them out with blind faith, or are the players ignoring his instructions?

There is no sign of a plan or playing philosophy. It's a mess. Monk is not responsible for the toxic group he's inherited, but he hasn't implemented anything.

I haven’t figured it out. Aimless long balls that’s all I can see.

No idea. I made the same points in a previous thread.

Monk has lost the plot and is on a downward trajectory.

That said, he’s my hero again if we win today, or if he plays Westwood and Hutch.

We could play with 2 balls at the same time, our tactics are that bad we'd still not score.

And people on here called carvalhal clueless.

The plan is storm Dennis comes to the rescue and its called of. Clean sheet, no defeat, everyone's weekend saved.

Surely it’s obvious. We play it long to Fletcher, he holds it up and brings  the supporting players into play. Mmmmm, wonder if Monks not spotted something.

Rush every attacking move, before the fans even sense a side pass coming

= score or concede control of the game ... and we're not scoring 90 goals a game ...

Why can’t we just play players in their proper positions instead of chopping and changing all the time?

Play higher up the field and work hard to put their players under pressure when they have the ball, forcing mistakes.

Move the ball more quickly and support attacks and if they break down, close down space and not just sit back admiring the opposites ability to keep possession.

Above all else, show some character and will to win, instead of looking to hide or make excuses.

Most of the above requires energy and determination ahead of everything else so can we see it for once and give the fans something to cheer?

Tactic 1: give the ball to Bannan

Tactic 2: give it back to the opposites in the hope we can counter attack them in a bit

Seriously, I think that’s it

I often think that managers overthink things. Playing Forestieri as a wing back strikes me as equal parts desperation and equal parts overthinking.

A simple 4-4-2 with players in their natural positions and winning their individual battles. That’s the foundation and you build from there.
