In a 4-3-3 the wingers are very important in implementing a high press, they should often be the ones to begin the  press on the opposition full backs, which should prompt the rest of the midfield to press.

Although this is obviously tiring for the wide players, especially as they have to be getting behind the opposition in attack, then sometimes recover and help the full backs out back in the defensive third.

May be part of the reason for getting more wingers in, allowing us to rotate the wingers and be a bit more active in winning the ball higher up the field.

It's a great way to create attacking opportunities and box the opposites in.

Perhaps, but where will the goals come from? Playing 4-3-3 with 2 wingers, means a single striker, and all the front three have to be capable of double figures

Damn right, how many friggin wingers do we need? We always seem to go for wingers that have no idea where the goal is If we are to play the system we used on Saturday, we need to be looking at double figures from our wide player

Theres no pleasing you  ...you've been banging on all season that we should use the loan market for young premier league players ....I've never heard of him but if he's an upgrade on what we have then what's not to like...

Perhaps. Just perhaps, Wingers who can get 10-15 goals are in short supply, thus very expensive?

Ideally the wingers get in behind more often than the way we have played it so far, and the winger on the opposite side to the ball should be arriving at the backpost fairly regularly

Or we have to sign a 30 goal centre forward, it’s crazy

Well you say that but at the moment we have no 20 goal a season strikers (maybe Fletcher) and wide players who don’t score many, yet we’re the highest scorers in the league away from home. Crazy

Thought he was good in Dr Who as well.

Damn good actor if you ask me. Wonder what's he like on the wing?

Agreed. He should be exciting, if he gets going again but nonetheless, I imagine he'd fit in well with the team celebrations and away day partying?  Considering the likes of 24 Hour Party People and Human Traffic? :ghoulguy:

Of course there is, but......

We have done pretty well so far, but to push on, we need to add some missing ingredients. Plan A, playing 4-3-3, or a version there of. It works for our back line and midfield, but the issue has been, getting more goals from the front line. Basically we’d need at least one of the wide attackers to be a striker who plays wide, plus now, a replacement for Fletcher.

Plan B, playing 4-4-2. Here we would need, a replacement for Fletcher, and a striker who can play alongside Probably 2 box to box midfielders also

Neither of those systems are missing another winger who doesn’t score. I don’t really have a problem with Sims, but is he what was needed? My concern is, that we don’t do what we’ve done every transfer window since Wembley, and that’s duplicate positions we already have strength in, while ignoring the areas in which we are short. All I ask for every window, is that our recruitment is targeted

You're asking for something there that we've achieved only once since 1991 and three times since 1973. That last occasion (2006/7) we actually had four get into double figures and it helped us to the heady heights of a modest 9th in the Championship.

Setting goal targets for players is pretty pointless most of the time. There really is not that much of a strict link between such things and team performance.

For example, when we last had someone get 20 in a season, we finished 15th in League One. The last time we made the play-offs, our top scorer had an unremarkable 12. Back in 1992, when we finished 3rd in the entire league, our second leading scorer managed only 9 and the next highest was 6. Until last week, Leeds were top of the division  and their individual scoring numbers are pretty mediocre overall.
