It's in Keanes autobiography. He sent letters to most clubs requesting a trial, we responded that we had purchased bartman and wasn't looking for midfielders.

No that's not right - he made his debut for forest the season before we signed Bart-Williams.

No that's not right. He was playing for forest a year before we signed Bart-Williams.

Didn't we decline Shevchenko in favor of Booth?

No. booth was quite hot property that summer as Liverpool had been watching him but we were pretty much certs to buy him all summer in the end.

we weren't in for shevchenko.

there were various rumours about Lombardo and di livio in the early part of the season and then eventually we signed carbone.

We were proven right on Shevchenko in a way. He looked really weak and slow in English football compared to the more methodical Italian game.

Loved him for AC Milan though

Well we weren't ever really in for him so it's a bit of a non story but if we had been we wouldnt have been proven right! He may have looked weak and slow ten years later in England but in 1997 he was one of the best strikers in the world.

Patrick Berger signed for Liverpool instead late 90s

Didn't we also want that right back from kiev who ended up at Arsenal Luzhny?

Berger signed for Liverpool after scoring a penalty in the 1996 euro final. We were never In for him.

I was just trying to make us all feel better about it.

A team we could have had in the early 90's from failed bids to us turning them down:

Woods

Nilsson

Pearson

Stam

Worthington

Beckham***

Roy Keane *

Shezza

Waddle

Shevchenko**

Cantona

*Keane wrote to club for a trial but we rejected him as we had just signed Chris Bart-Williams.

** Shevchenko actually came on trial but was deemed not good enough and too small

*** We bid for Beckham and Man utd wanted 3 million. Dave Richards refused to pay 3 million for a reserve team player.

Continuing the theme of the team we could have had in the early 90's from failed bids to us turning them down:

Woods

Nilsson

Wright

McGragth

Worthington

Strachan

Palmer

Sheridan

Waddle

Cantona

Hirst

Lee Trundle bid rejected and eventually went to Bristol city instead.

I remember Lee Trundle saying a striker would not want to sign for us because we're known for not creating chances for strikers.

The most annoying thing was he was right, at that time.

wyn davies ......was a hotshot bolton centre forward who alan brown tried to sign but surprise surprise the board wouldnt pay him what he wanted and he went to newcastle and became a hero to them ..........

another one from way back then was joe baker who catterick went for and again the board wouldnt weigh in with the cash which wazzed off catterick so much that he resigned went  to everton and the rest is history .

At the time it was reported we bid 3.5m for Beckham which Man Utd turned down.

Peter Reid, I'm sure Big Jack tried to sign him from Bolton.

Would have been a great signing for us, went to Everton instead.

Interesting, as he turned down chance to manage us as well.

If I remember it right, he said "right club, wrong time"
