Nixon's piece:

Sheffield Wednesday are ready to splash out £1.7million to land Gary Hooper for one season.

Wednesday also hope to land Norwich centre-half Michael Turner, 31, on loan.

£1.7 million is quite a bit of money for one season, but might work out better than forking out £5million for a full purchase (with wages on top) and having him for 3 seasons etc.

Also, i honestly didn't know we wanted another centre back... but Turner is definitely good enough.

It seems ridiculously high for a player that we won't even own.

And don't state the obvious ''well you're not paying it blah blah blah''.

Effectively a gamble; we cant or won't afford to pay transfer fee and contract wages, and therefore offer a structured year's gamble agreement. If if works great, we are £40m or so up, if not we re-assess for next season and so on.

Some accountant will doing the math on the various options.

£500k for a year?

He'd cost £5m for a full transfer on, say, a four year deal

Also everyone keeps moaning about not spending enough money or showing ambition, or not having good enough quality players (especially you)

It's not high.

Gay Hooper is 27.

If we bought him for £5m and gave him a four year contract he would still cost £1.2m per year in wages. The transfer fee divided by four years would be £1.25m.

Therefore buying him would cost £2.45m per year.

Loaning him will cost £1.7m per year.

It is true that their would potentially be a sell on fee if we owned him, but at 27 that will decrease every year.

Let's say after 3 years service when he was 30 we sold him for £2m. That would still represent a £3m loss (£1m per year) in addition to his £1.2m wages. Therefore it would cost us £2.2m per year in this scenario.

Obviously there is also the potential to sign a player and sell for a profit, however that looks unlikely for a 27 year old like Hooper. Even if he scored 20 goals we might not make a profit by selling him in at 28.

As I have said, I don't care about the money. But for those that do, £1.7m for one year looks sensible.

The ambitious Owls have offered to pay Norwich a £500,000 loan fee and will cover ALL the striker’s £32,000-a-week wages.

Several clubs wanted Hooper, 27, but nobody else has been willing to pay his salary in full and a loan fee.

Hooper cost Norwich £5m from Celtic two years ago but is not in the plans of boss Alex Neil.

Wednesday also hope to land Norwich centre-half Michael Turner, 31, on loan.

Worth every penny ,Just put match day tickets up another £5 to cover cost   :duntmatter: £32000 a week bloody stupid money .

What do you expect when trying to loan a £5m striker? Ain't gonna come cheap, is he?! If we want the firepower to make us contenders this season, it'll cost a hefty wedge. We're effectively having to buy a year of an expensive player's contract.

Gray just cost Burnley a 9mil fee on a 3yr deal, that's 3mil per annum + his salary which will probably be upwards of 1mil. That's £4m+ for the season; by contrast, 1.7 for Hooper this year is decent value.
