Are we actually...good?

Recommended Posts

We're doing pretty well, but the best thing is there is so much more to come from the side. I've had the feeling over the past few weeks that the team is just starting to come together and is going through the gears nicely. I really think we'll start to see it's true potential in the new year.

What I love is though is that we've got a manager who is a figurehead for the club. He's not everyones cup of tea but he knows his own mind and players are in no doubt where they stand. He'd walk over broken glass to be successful here.

If GM is given 12 months then I think we'll have a squad, which will be lightyears ahead of this one and one we can be proud of.

We've been a team who either win or lose for a few seasons now.

We have solved our money problems and we are getting in a better position off the field. This could help us later in the year if we have a few key injuries because unlike in the past we might be able to fund good loan deals or even buy again come January.

In terms of the team we have a good amount of competition and back-up players who are much better than in previous seasons. We have options. Take Sunday, we can't decide who plays on the right of midfield, be it Palmer,Prutton or JJ. All three are good players who could do a job for us.

At last we have a manager with the same amount of passion and love for the club that we all have. This can prove difficult at times for Megson but its his job to handle the pressure and to remember at times he needs to be a manager first and a fan second.

it may have been tough at first but Megson's brought passion, desire, hard work and much improved discipline to a team that lacked all these qualities for far too long.

We will be amoung the top six for the rest of this season I just hope we have enough points to secure promotion at the end of it.

The result on Sunday is meaningless to our progress this season, a loss doesn't mean we're rubbish, just as a win won't guarantee us promotion. It's a derby and the best team doesn't always win out on the day. It's more like a cup match than a league game and the performance/result will have no bearing on the rest of our season (besides the 3 points).

I look at our side now and think where are we vunerable and apart from being picky and saying LH midfield where we do not have a out and out Left side specialist then we do apear to be strong everywhere else so i am very positive about us , i also believe we are still work in progress and ideally GM would like to ship another 4or5 out perm anently and bring in another 3 or 4 of his own players .

I also believe if we are around the top 3 at xmas MM will alow Gm to bring in 2 or 3 players to get us over the finishing line

Good times

How we acquit ourselves against Huddersfield will be the true measure.

I think they are the best in the league and the benchmark we should chase.

We still need to find the right man to partner Madine and a reliable winger on the opposite side to Marshall.

Agreed. It's us and Huddersfield for the automatic promotion places

I think we have better performances to come. We have two top strikers who have contributed virtually nothing yet, for a start.

The derby is a one off, the result probably won't mean much. I think the performances and results in the next 3-4 games will probably be a guide to whether you should feel excited.

lol

I agree with this. Sunday is a derby, the biggest derby in the whole of the football league so i'm not convinced the result will reflect either ours or the pigs seasons. Hopefully Megson has instilled in our players what it actually means

to the team, the club and the fans to go out and win the game. Come on Wednesday, Sunday is about, and for, the fans, the bragging rights of Sheffield.

I've been thinking about starting this topic for a while but...

Are we actually as good as our league position? This time last year we were 5th on 17 points. We're now 2nd on 25 points, 3 behind the 'runaway' league leaders. No one seems to be talking about us though?

Not only have we not lost at home so far this season - we haven't even drawn. We have scored more goals at home than any other team in the league. Away from home is my big worry... We've lost to Bournemouth, Bury and got absolutely humiliated by Stevenage... but are we starting to turn a corner there? A good draw at Charlton, followed by a win at Yeovil and a consecutive away win at Hartlepool (unbeaten at home until us). Has Megson cracked it? Two of our results on the road have come against teams right at the top of the table and in form. We've turned over MK dons at home, beaten one of our local rivals...

I think what I am trying to say is... I don't really believe it. For years now I have watched other teams storm away at the top of the league... go 3,4,5,6 games in a row unbeaten... I've always thought 'why can't that be us' ? Now we look like we are doing it and I don't believe it's real. I can't get my head round us actually being good.. are we? We've got the top goalscorer in England.. he's being supplied by one of the best wingers in this League. We seem to have secured one of the best centre mids I've seen since Whelan. Our back four is actually starting to look pretty solid and we've got a keeper behind them who was instrumental in Derby's promotion to the prem a few years back...

But I keep expecting us to lose against poo poo teams. I keep feeling amazed when we get consecutive wins... Like it's pure fluke. But is it? Or has Megson cracked it? Is this a false dawn or are we actually - finally - truly beginning a slow climb back towards where we all want to be?

Look basically can I get excited or not?

The Stevenage score and the way we get out-passed for lengthy periods still worries me. I know these passing sides haven't made it count but I'm scared that one day they will...mainly on sunday!

I am sure if anyone would be instilling just how important this match is to us it will be Megson.

I also find it interesting that Agent Wilson is trying to bring in players before the derby, surely this will play right into our hands as they wont have played with the rest of the team and wont have a feeling for how important the match is locally. - Well done Agent Wilson , you are playing a blinder

I'm positive becasue I think we're still building nicely and are only going to get better when the likes of JJ, Lowe and Cogba get up to full fitness. The size of our team is also a good reason to be positive, even when we're not playing well we're going to be hard to boss off the ball and bully, which you've not been able to say for a long time.

Last season's start was good, but it was always built on early season form. We were always likely to fall away once we had one or two results. Obviously it's still early days for everyone, but look at United this year. Not too dissimilar to the way we started last season.

This year we've actually had a pretty mixed start, including the absolute abomination of a result at Stevenage. But we seem to be motoring on abit now and building momentum. We seem to be growing into the season rather than picking up results on the back of false results and waiting to slide like last year.

I still don't know if we're good enough to be one of those sides that dominates the division long term. I worry we're not, but I think I only worry about that because I've actively watched Wednesday for about 16 years and nothing that good has ever happened before.

I try to look at it objectively. Maybe even from the point of view of another fan or manager of another club. Would you want your next match to be against Wednesday? A big, strong physical side on good form, scoring for fun, with the leagues top scorer upfront and a big, difficult to break down presence in midfield and at the back, on a good run of form and winning every game at home? Would you really fancy playing against us at the minute?

Regardless of the result of Sunday, we need to be looking the 3 games after and winning them all to be realistic about automatic promotion.

Colchester @ Home, Away to Carlisle & Wycombe ... needs to be done !!

Asked a mate of mine whos a Poolie fan who went to the game up there. Says we are good but not quite championship quality yet.

Mind you we have been a much better team at home so far, and im sure we'll improve our squad significantly if (hopefully when!) we do go up.

And yet last year we absolutely spanked them 5-0 and almost got dragged into a relegation battle.

I think we always have been destined to succeed since Uncle Mandy took us over, it's just particularly us younger lot still couldn't believe it.

All it took was to find a good manager then, and now we've found one now with Megson.
