Andrew_Owl
Don't agree with this, i know this sounds hartless but betting companies are businesses, and they don't force anyone to bet.

No, but they do use all sorts of tactics to get people hooked and squeeze as much money as possible out of them, sometimes with utterly disastrous consequences for the individuals and their families. Addiction is an illness, and if this move helps to protect people from succumbing to its ravages, then that can only be a good thing.

Guest HillsboroughOwlNI
Are there rules on forming a betting company, named after a shirt sponsor?

There was a documentary a while back which showed that in one game there were more than 700 gambling adverts or logos displayed, equal to more than six logos per minute. For somebody who's trying to keep their addiction under control and simply wants to enjoy a day out at the football, this feels like an unnecessarily cruel form of enticement. Same could be said for closing betting shops in case they want to walk round town? Where does it end?

Tobacco companies didn't force people to smoke but tobacco advertising was rightly banned.

Smoking - Has a direct negative effect on your health every single time you smoke one. A very high majority of smokers are addicted to smoking. Gambling - Has no direct effect on your physical health and only a small percentage of gamblers would be classed as addicts. Many gamble their whole life responsibly. I certainly don’t think that a sponsor not being on the shirt is going to cure gambling addiction in any form and just seems utterly pointless. 1

Tracksuit
I think this is fantastic news. The sizes of football shirts are so skewed that you often see kids at 12 wearing adult size shirts & being billboards for betting companies. It never sat right with me.
