Pulis doing exactly what he needs to do

We really don’t. If we want more than Pulis ball we’re accused of wanting Pele’s Brazil or Cruyff’s Holland. It’s not deluded for football fans to want their team to have a shot on target in more than one game in three.

He got a reputation for the same reason Ron Atkinson, Dave Bassett, Kevin Keegan and Bielsa got a reputation. He plays in a certain way. When Eustace’s team was in free fall Atkinson immediately changed the mood and style - he brought in non-stars like Bennett and Whitton admittedly - but would he have stuck with boring the pants off the fans and the opposition?

I expect rubbish and certainly this season I won’t shell out for it.  I get why many others- a majority presumably - think otherwise. It really is a case of each to their own.

Monk's football style was more boring but less well organised. Whilst Monk was here, you couldn't see what he was planning to do. He played players that didn't suit how we played under him and he didn't play to our strengths. At least with Pulis, like with Bruce, we can see what he's trying to do. Give Pulis time and he will stabilise us, kick us on and I believe he'll eventually achieve what Bruce would have done.

People moaning about the boring football need to realise that Pulis is doing exactly what he needed to come in and do.

A bore draw against a stoke team that has scored 11 goals in their last 4 games on paper is actually a very good result.

A bore draw against a swansea side in the play offs who have lost 1 in their last 7 is on paper a very good result.

And by all accounts wouldve been another draw against preston but for a mistake.

It doesn't matter how good a team you are if you concede more goals than you score then you are in trouble and we are not a team to score lots of goals so he absolutely has to make us hard to beat and lay defensive foundations (considering the games before coming in we lost to Luton, Wycombe and Rotherham) and then build from there to work on the attacking side of our play.

I'd understand it if we'd just sacked a manager that played attractive football but Moneks football was just as bad and would anyone generally swap boring draws against the better sides for boring defeats against the worst sides?

We are so deluded as a fanbase that we expect free flowing attacking football, something that we've had a few times in the last 20 odd years. We need an experienced manager to come in and do a job to get us out of this season alive and TP is the man for the job and does generally seem to care about building the club back up.

Get behind him, get to January so he can buy his own players and actually sign a striker that suits his system and get on with it.

Good post!

We have to be patient.

I'm not sure that he's the long term solution. But right now, we don't have the luxury of being able to think long term. There's a short term imperative - stop the rot, steady the ship and stay up - and Pulis is probably a smart choice in that respect.

No its not but needs must unfortunately

Consider this. There are 24 teams in the Championship. Only three can be relegated. Therefore 21 managers will find a way to avoid relegation. Many of those managers will play a more attacking style of football. PulisBall is not the only way.
Yesterday, Derby, Wycombe, Rovrum, Coventry all also drew. All had more possession. All had more shots. All had more shots on target. All scored. We finished the game with 3 right backs, 3 centre backs, 4 midfielders and no strikers.

Some of those managers have been moulding their teams for 2-3 seasons though. Pulis doesn't have that luxury - he's can only work with the materials he inherited.

We already had the defensive foundations in place under Monk: only six teams had conceded fewer goals than us by the time he was sacked.

It's no coincidence that our dreadful run of form started once Luongo got injured, either - with him in the team, we only conceded 3 goals in 5 games under Monk. Now that he's returned, we look a lot more solid again. Hopefully if he picks up another injury, Pulis is able to compensate for his absence more effectively than we did under Monk, as that run of games against Luton, Rotherham and Wycombe was criminal. By the time we figured out how to beat Bournemouth and draw with Millwall without him, the damage had already been done.

It's early days of course, but if Pulis is going to keep us up, he'll simply have to find a way to get us scoring goals on a more regular basis rather than just tightening up our already pretty tight defence.

That all sounds a bit familiar......

Monk's football wasn't attractive. More often than not we set up to nullify the opposition. If that failed it either nullified ourselves, as we caved in from a winning position or we got hammered.

To play decent stuff and get results, you need to have a good balance and mix of being organised, effective and clinical. Even the best teams at this level have to sometimes grind out results.

Pulis has already made us look better organised as a team. When he can bring in his own players, we'll become more effective further up the pitch too.

You are right. Some managers are further in the process. It’s easier for them. No doubt. But we could’ve started yesterday 4-3-3. Wildsmith, Palmer, Lee’s, Borner, Van Aken, Brown, Luongo, Bannan, Harris, Rhodes, Kachunga. We could’ve spent the week in training organising in that shape. Instead Pulis chose to use the materials he inherited by finishing the game with 3 RB, 3 CB, 4 midfield and no strikers in a game we “needed” to win.

Which illustrates the unbalanced and weak squad that we have accumulated. You can’t change that overnight and Pulis has said enough about our deficiencies to give some hope that he will address the issues given the backing.

Anybody who thinks that overnight change is possible with this squad is in cloud cuckoo land.

Got no complaints myself from games so far.

We look more solid than we have done under Monk. Swansea had won their last 3 home games without conceding and sat 4th in the league at the time. Yet they didn’t get a sniff off us and the first half of football was really enjoyable.

Stoke had scored 12 goals in 5 games and sit just outside the play offs. Yet again we managed them very well.

We need to get to January and hope Pulis can bring in a couple of forwards that can change the dynamic of the team going forwards.

We knew the football wouldn’t be amazing, but it’s better than getting played off the park by Rotherham and being out played by Wycombe and Luton. Pulis gives us the best possible chance of staying in this division.
