Short-lived footballing excellence but brilliant, for a brief period of time. That's Diego, loved and hated in equal measure. Ibrahimovic has also played more club games, more internatoinal games, scored more goals at both levels and has a better scoring ratio. He has also played for more high profile teams than Maradona. He's also won more Footballer of the Year awards (14 vs 4), more Top Scorer awards (5 vs 2), more club Championships medals (11 vs 3) and more domestic cup competitions (19 vs 5). The only thing Maradona has achieved that Ibrahimovic hasn't is a World Cup and I think a Champions League medal. So in my opinion, a far better footballer who has achieved far more than Maradona. Maradona won the World Cup for Argentina almost by himself. Rogerwyldesmullet Posted November 27, 2020 Share Posted November 27, 2020 The reason I don’t think he is the greatest ever is because Pele was a supreme athlete and complete footballer - he could use both feet, dribble, shoot, pass, tackle, head the ball etc. For similar reasons I think Ronaldo is better than Messi and likewise I can understand why some would say George Best was a more compete player than Maradona but he was rubbish at tackling - broke Glyn Pardos leg as I recall. What Maradona did possess was unbelievable skill with the football. Glenn Hoddle described him as being from another planet in that regard and check out this clip from Lineker. Lastly - the other thing Maradona did was to make humdrum sides brilliant. Apart from Burrschaga and Valdano, that Argentina side was so so and to win the Scudetto twice with Naples and a UEFA cup at that time was miraculous. So while I applaud the longevity of players like Ibrahimovic et al, for sheer brilliance and the ability to take teams to another level there are 7 that absolutely stand out in my lifetime Pele Maradona Best Ronaldo Cruyff Messi Platini 4 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Now you’ve got about 10 teams who can win it every time... England, Italy, Spain, Germany, France, Portugal, Belgium, Holland, Brazil, Argentina.. hard for an individual to make a difference. Messi was 1 game away from doing it in 2014 anyway. I’d go for Cristiano Ronaldo as the best ever as I think the modern game is light years ahead and of the two stand out players of this generation, he has everything Messi has but has the physicality to win ugly too Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
