Like Beckham?

so you rate stewart downing as good as beckham?

beckham could deliver a ball from extraordinary angles into threatening positions, also beckham played in sides that carried way more 'multiple' build up threats besides himself.

How old are you? Guessing a fair bit younger than 30 because if you were older than that you’d know that your athleticism isn’t yet on the decline at 30.

we do need fresh legs though with pace and power.. but it’s more because Bannan/Lee aren’t overly physical players. It’s been a problem for the last 4 years so it’s not an age thing as we were saying the same when they were 25

really?

No where near as good, but you don’t have to beat a man to be effective wide.

Yeah I reckon so.. I’m 31 and hitting PBs still. Granted I’m not a professional athlete, but if you look at athletics, at the last world championships half the 100m finalists were over 30. Most of the top long distance runners are in their 30s too. I don’t think that it’s noticeable. Players usually play until mid 30s or even longer now. It’s gradual.. I think 30 is the point the decline starts but it’s only marginal in your early 30s

I would have guessed you were physically at 'your peak' by 27/28, experience kicks in from then, or you put 'harder yards' in during training.

no you don't, but you have to have the 'capability' and 'threat' of doing so, other wise any f/b worth his salt will have you.

or be waddle or willie hendersonesque, and beat 3 or 4.

No problem with him as an option, so long as we also get some pace to compliment what we have.

Pace isn't always much use against a team defending deep. You need alternative options.

Agree, people have a melt down but maybe we’ve only offered him a 1 year deal, to add to our options as a delivery specialist when it’s needed.

As you say, there’s nothing stopping us trying to sign a pacy wide player too

Oh my, it’s starting all over again People were saying the same when we signed all those past their sell by date players before. Ended up counting the days until their contracts expired. Will we ever learn

I live up in North Yorkshire and the general feeling from Boro fans is he's finished.Something about 2 assist and 1 goal all season. They sold Adam Reach to us to help pay for his transfer fee and huge wages, many were not impressed at the time as Reach was a young lad with plenty of potential and has gone on to be able to play in numerous positions,he also scores goals and has plenty of assists.Reach out left as opposed to Downing I know who I would pick now,Brucie probably has a wide left man in his sights as he likes Reach to roam about.

Nothing against Downing though he has been a very good pro.

I’m comfortable with what I’ve learnt personally. Bruce is going to be signing 2 or more, attacking players with pace and younger legs. Downing would be a different option and on a 1 year deal.

If we do sign him it means Bruce thinks he’d be useful for a season and we have the budget to add him to the squad. I trust Bruce’s track record of building promotion squads more than some folk on owls talk or Carlos

According to Whosccored.com, the football bible for stats, Downing scored just 0.1 point more than George Boyd, so the old regime would sign him up as a slight improvement on a player we have just let go and then pay loads of money into his pension for him until he retires.

Hopefully the new regime (Steve Bruce pace and young legs signings inc.) will not.

Massive gamble IMHO.

Can you imagine if we signed him and he became a revelation?

We'd have Steve Gibson demanding the League Chairman meet so that he could demand £50 million for him and then sue us when they all told him to jog on.

Linford Christie was 32 when he won the 100m Olympic Gold medal.

yeah! he was, and 'one swallow does not a summer make', how many 100m Olympic gold medallists are 'usually' 32 or over, and how many are younger?

professional sport is a younger man's game, if anyone older is still in there he's racing against time.

downing is too old at 35, we've had them before with sedgewick being called by some on here 'concrete legs', we need

'greedy, FAST, ENERGETIC, and skilful men', NOT THE DROSS WE'VE HAD TO SUFFERIN THE PAST.

you can come up with foreman fought at 50, ali at nigh on 40, and god knows how many others, but the truth is their best days are WELL BEHIND THEM, and the future IS for YOUNGER MEN.
