The Secret Footballer has also published a book about how psychology can be effective in football - "How to Win". It is a good read and has some use to normal humans leading a normal life.

It will be wasted on quite a few on this site IMO then.

Read a book by the guy who is viewed as one of the best in his field. The book is called the chimp paradox but can’t remember his name. It’s a fantastic book that explains how the brain works. You don’t need to have mental health issues or be a top sports person to appreciate what he’s about. In every day life understanding how your brain works can have massive benifitd

By Professor Steve Peters, think he works or has worked at Uni of Sheffield as well, but could be wrong.

Great read in an understandable format.

But what do them experts though *shakes fist at sky*

Having worked in M H for many years I can assure you that good M H often has a bearing on performance , football or any other walk of life and obviously availability of a link to someone with a knowledge of social psychiatry and psychology has to be of benefit for everyone .

It is dangerous to confuse the two areas of mental health and sports psychology.

Mental health issues need to be addressed by qualified professionals, supported where appropriate with drugs to help certain conditions.  And I agree with the need for all employers , like swfc, to put in a mental health strategy to support its workforce, with 3rd party specialist support.

That is a totally different proposition than a sports psychologist who is a performance coach.

As an example.

A player has missed his last two penalties and is now gripped by fear of missing his next one. The keeper looks massive and the goal tiny. The sports psychologist is there to coach techniques to help the player to have a better chance to score his next penalty.

If that same player is suffering from anorexia then that has absolutely no way someone who is effectively a performance coach should deal with it. It’s a mental health issue that needs qualified medical intervention.

Swfc Sports Psychologist to Abdi. Relax, close your eyes. I want you to picture putting on some football boots. That's it, good. Tie the laces. Good. Now, picture moving one foot in front of the other. Ok. Great. Now, imagine there's a football to your right. Pick it up and examine it. Do you remember what it looks and feels like? Oh! Nurse, call the ambulance. Almen has just slipped a disc picking up an imaginary football. Bugger. Oh well, only two more weeks..........

Is that a actually an attempt at humour ?

Does anyone know if we use any Sports psychologist?

Think there is a place for it in all top level sports and actually think if it helps a sports person control emotions and concentrate on job in hand, think it will benefit them in life and could in deed prevent mental health issues.

Mcmigo doesnt realise you have to be a psychologist first - usually takes about 5 years to qualify .They may then specialise in clinical ,educational , criminal ,industrial ,etc , including sports psychology . But firstly they are Psychologists who choose to work with expertise in a particular field . All of which is entirely related to good mental health .

We have Chris Kirkland talking about his Mental Health problems in one thread and then Mcmigo dismissing the possible need for a sports psychologist as ' frippery '.

Just shows how much we need a better understanding of M H issues .

I'd say your comment highlights the need for a better understanding of MH issues my friend.

To enter this line of work, you will need an undergraduate degree in a psychology-related subject which is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS) or the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES). Alternatively, if you complete an unrelated undergraduate degree, you will be required to complete a one-year conversion course.

In order to become a chartered psychologist or accredited practitioner, you will then need to obtain a relevant postgraduate qualification. Sports and exercise psychologists are typically also required to register as members of the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

Typical...Its the off hand manner we treat superstition that has led us to the pretty pass we are in at the moment..As I have said before..Mr Chansiri was correct about the monks an' stuff, but then places the "Golden Elephants" in the wrong position on The South...Its schoolboy stuff...

I took note at the West Brom game the other night, walking down Parkfield Rd..The number of f.ookin' idiots steppin' on pavement cracks was bloody mind boggling, under ladders....walkin' UNDER!..not AROUND the road sign on the Lepp!!!...UNDER!!!..FFS!

Its bloody basics....

I'm not against some "psychologist" helping the players and actually askin' if they really "wanted to sh *g their mum" or whatever, but I honestly think we are missing the whole point...

You wander home of an evening after getting beat, and fans are trottin' out "ooh Dawson flaps, Why Nuhiu?..Wheres Hutch?....is abdi dead?"..When the main reason we f.ookin' lost is because they didn't look where they were puttin' their feet as they wandered into the place 2 hours previous...

Has anyone yet..prayed to Odin for Kierons hip?...I bet not a one...Walked widdershins around the Kop triangle?...No?

You all just tip up..willy nilly. talkin' tactics.......I'm virtually running this club on me own

Ok I'm sorry, but I'm willing to make amends.

How about if we get a few dozen supporters to sneak into the ground one night and turn the "Golden Elephants" around. We'd need a couple of dozen because they're too heavy for just you and me to lift.

Then we could get some sand and cement dry mix in a gritter lorry and drive down Parkfield Rd scattering it all over the pavements. The next time it rains all the pavement cracks will disappear like magic. No cracks to walk on = no bad luck.

Also we could change all the ladders to little step ladders that are too low to walk under. Well I might be able to get under because I'm only short, but I'll make a conscious effort to walk round.

Do you think this will be enough to satisfy the football gods ?
