Why is everyone so obsessed with pace?

Recommended Posts

Attack...

1. to skin an opposition full back and get into a dangerous crossing position, instead of turning around and going backwards (obvious helps if player is at least half decent at dribbling/crossing too).

2. to counter attack at pace and scare the s.hit out of defenders, instead of stopping at the halfway line waiting for support, therefore allowing the opposition to get back and regroup.

3. Leave the fastest 2 attackers on the  halfway line when defending corners, opposition will likely think twice about sending as many players up, resulting in less pressure on the defence and leaving the option of a quick counter as above.

Defence...

To lessen the possibility of the above happening to us.

So it goes something like this

P(/.5) + (- A) x 11 = 0-4

P(/.5) + A(/.5) x 11 = 2-2

P + A(/.5) x 11 = 2-0

P + A x 11 = 4-0

Nooooooooooo......You got the decimal point in the wrong place!

The obsession came from Carlos' turgid second season.

..I wish he was as obsessed about it as we were.

I don't think anybody's obsessed, it's just that most of us agree that pace is not only worthwhile it is a must have in a team

We need a dribbler.

Like Charles Charlie Charles from the fast show. He could dribble!

A pacey individual isn't going to sort out all of our ills.

Far more important to have a fit team playing attacking football with intent and quickness of thought imo. This is what we have lacked over the last few seasons. We have players who are 'quick' but they need to add endurance & conditioning to the mix, we also have players who can pick them out so for me it is a change in philosophy rather than pure speed that is more important.

Agree with you @GazBricks

We don’t need pace specifically. Many ways to win matches.

And in Joao, Forestieri, Reach and Hunt we have reasonable pace if not exactly Usain-esque.

I also agree that very few players at our current level combine blistering pace and a final ball. Such an animal is rare, even in the Prem.
