Dave Barber on Radio Sheffield

Recommended Posts

what's he said?

That the earthquake in february 2008 ruptured the soil pipes from the kop urinals and now all the piss from matchdays just soaks down under the pitch.

That's why come December its such a state. The pitch is just a giant piss sponge and it's killing all the grass.

Finally we have the truth.

Still would like to know what he said?

no easy fix

going to be a big job to get it thro to end of season

cost 1m+ to sort out pitch but even then top firms will be booked doing prem clubs

in past several mistakes  made -expert opinion in 80s wrong about drainage

old director dead now wanted sand /sparse grass  painted  green

several mangers insisted on training on pitch against his wishes

south stand blocks sunlight on pitch no coincidence best pitch when the south stand was being renovated

Know Dave well from our childhood, we used to play football together, he was a decent keeper and world class groundsman. I'm almost certain he was apprenticed to Mr Blunkett.

Not from the horses mouth but I heard he jacked in at Hillsborough due to PTSD after the Semi tragedy.

A great lad who loved his football and proud of his role at Hillsborough and Yes, he did win awards for his groundkeeping at Hillsborough.

Close the urinals, stop people weeing in the ground and the problem is solved then!

It's clear it's more than just a bit threadbare.

It's completely fecked and looks wrong.

I'll ave to listen to this on playback later.

We need a new one now if we are to have a chance of playoffs.

New pitch in two weeks? Love to see how you pull that one off!

Dave barber was in charge when I went to work for him during work experience - around 92 I think. He was a good fella. His assistant the. Was Steve Kiddy - he's in charge now? They were all good fun.

Steve Kiddy left in 2013.

South Stand needs transparent panels to let the sun reach the pitch.

Simples.

The issue is the grass not rooting properly, which he mentioned happened before because one of the directors wanted the grass greener.
