i used to be sc_owl
I reckon we need a CB, CM and forward. As for who - I haven't got a clue tbh.
oh_weds_we_love_you
It's no good having five midfielders, all who cannot perform in a more disciplined, deeper role. Wouldn't be my priority to be honest as I don't believe anything better than JOC is required at this level with the attacking threat and defensive record we have this season. Unless you are talking about next season and the prospect of no longer being in this division. The CM for me this season has to be Miller and Coke when fit, then probably JOC and Coke against the better teams away from home. Striker (Steve Howard mould) and a central defender (who is comfortable on the ball) would be my preferred options.
Big Fish
I think it has been mentioned before. What we need is pace, pace, pace !! Take JJ out of the side and we're pedestrian. Let's get some fast fooks who can tear this league up.
frastheowl
In all my days of playing/watching football never have i heard of any player being described as "too energetic" . Absolute Genius!!!!! Well it's clearly a problem, if you end up chasing players around the field and leaving massive holes in the centre of the field. I like JOC, and you can't knock him for the effort he puts in. He's a far better option than Potter, but he simply isn't disciplined enough. paulmat
Personally I feel a CM can wait till the summer (but it's definitely a position that we need to improve on). The priority should be a CB, someone who can be back up for Purse this season with a view to replacing him next. Not sure about strikers - I'm sure AI has his reasons for wanting more. We've not had a decent midfielder, who can control the game, for years. It's the one position which would make a huge difference to our prospects of getting promotion this season. I've no problems getting someone in just to cover til the end of the season, and then looking more long term in the summer. But we NEED someone now. Above anything else. Why do we need a big target man? We've got Mellor already, and we've shown that when Morrison plays up front with A.N. Other, it forces us to get the ball down and play to his strengths. I really want us to move away from the old fashioned, lump it to a big man routine...which we did at the early stage of the season with Mellor. A squad with the quality of Morrison, Mellor, Heffernan and Johnson to choose from, shouldn't really need to be spending money on another striker...in my opinion. A centre half to replace Beevers would be a bonus, but a holding midfielder (Richard Hughes, Gavin Mahon, Martin Rowlands) is the area I'd look to shore up first. Absolute Genius!!!!! Fras is totally correct, some players can at times be too energetic. A midfield player who runs around like a headless chicken and doesn't appreciate when to sit and hold can be a liability to a team.
Bannofan
Two Centre Backs for me. Purse just isn't good enough despite his commitment..misses too many tackles, makes too many rash challenges. How he failed to stop Hoskins scoring BR's first is beyond me. Unfortunately this is not the only goal he has been partly or wholly responsible for lately. Beevers still seems to be struggling at times at won't be good enough in the Championship. He would benefit from having someone better than Purse next to him IMO. My first choice centre half pairing at the moment would be Buxton and Beevers. We need to look at the defence ( except the keeper, obviously) as I think it is 'creaky' at this level and would need completely revamping if we go up. Purse, Beevers and Spurr are all arguably not good enough for a decent season in the Championship, and we haven't got a specialist defensive right back. Defences need time to gel, so let's get it sorted now with a view to having a settled one for next season, hopefully in the Championship.

Best attacking record in the league and best defensive record in the league haven't we, or pretty close? That suggests every position is doing its job fairly well. So, based on that, I thought 5 CM's for 2 spaces was enough, as where 3 strikers for 2 positions isn't, and neither is 3 CD's for 2 positions either. I believe JOC can put his foot in and be the player you want for this league and that Coke or Miller can control the game in a more advanced role. I don't want Howard for his qualities as a target man - though they do offer a plan B (Mellor has never been a target man!). I want a tall, no nonsense striker who will be their head on to our set-pieces and crosses. We have Jones, Spurr, Teale and occassionally Johnson who can put a delivery in from out wide, or Coke, Miller and Potter who can deliver intellegent balls in, we've just lacked a guy who will put his head in where he can get hurt to get a goal. Clearly, Irvine doesn't see Heffernan as more than a bit part player, so we have Mellor and Morrison - that is it (other than JJ as an option, but we need him out wide tbh). And a CD is definately needed - can't keep letting Spurr/Jones play on the oppostite side so Buxton can cover the holes in the centre of defence when Purse/Beevers are injured/suspended. We also need to get Darren Purse back to what he is capable of or find a replacement, we desperately need a strong commanding centre half. Isn't this just talking about football and transfer speculation thing good! It beats talking about club politics.

Most teams use an holding midfielder when playing 5 midfielders. Wednesday have played 442 all season so i doubt very much that JOC as been told to play the holding midfield role in front of the back four . To say he is not disciplined enough is utter tripe. The guy does cover lots of ground and gets up and down the pitch if as is often the case he is attempting to make a challenge out wide then that tells me our wide players are maybe are not doing there jobs correctly and your not disciplined coment should be aimed at them. Iam not for one minute saying JOC is faultless but to call him not disciplined when you dont know for sure what role he as been given by Irvine is utter bull. Beholder
List of priorities: A strong, fast, assured centre half who is preferably around 24 so he can see us all the way to the premiership and become our captain. A commanding midfielder in the Essien mould..!. I think we are OK for strikers but I wouldn't be surprised if MM hasn't specifically asked for one as a Marque signing that will tell the football world that Wednesday are gonna be contenders... camffiti
Centre back has to be the priority in the short term and also medium term, when Purse leaves. I haven't seen any quotes about a centre-half and a striker being priorities though. Edited December 15, 2010 by camffiti
danblakemore
As long as this opportunity isn't wasted on poo . Personally I'd buy a midfielder and defender. Ship out hinds. Send palmer on loan till next season. Although I have a sneaking feeling our first signing will be made by MM not AI as a statement of intent. Bluesteel
Sorry if this has been posted already but. Mandaric's words. AI see's a centre half and a striker as priorities. http://www.thestar.co.uk/sportheadlines/Irvine-given-Mandaric-goahead-to.6661144.jp "at least two" even better

tomhollywood
As far as the midfield goes, someone in the mould of Majewski at Forest would go down a treat alongside Miller/Coke.
gurujuan
Agree we need a ball winner in midfield but with 5 central midfield players in the squad its hard to justify. A striker and an extra defender are a must but the thought of someone like Parkin coming would send a shiver down my spine. FFS how long has it taken us to convince AI to let the players play proper football. You just know what we will revert to if that lump joined us.
