Yep, Mendez-Laing just let Clarke have a free run off the back of him, which was outrageous.

Storey did what he could but should never have had to go out to the flank in the first place.

Palmer switched off and let Roberts beat him to a ball he had no right reaching, given the headstart Palmer had on him.

A terrible goal to concede at any time, but to concede it at that point in a game of such magnitude was simply ridiculous.

Couple that with the abomination of a goal Hutchinson gave away in the first leg, and it's not hard to see where we need to improve for next season.

If I were Moore, I'd be asking for a specialist defensive coach a.s.a.p. It could be the most important signing he makes for this club.

I completely agree, both goals were avoidable.

I think Neil knew based on previous games we'd played that he'd play the percentages against us. Nullify our play and pack the midfield and hope they'd nick something with a set piece or mistake (things we've been guilty of too much).

It paid off..

A few Liam Palmer facts

Liam Palmer is our longest serving player

Palmer began his career with Sheffield Wednesday when he was just seven years old.

Aside from a loan spell at Tranmere Rovers, he has spent his whole career with the Owls, being used in various defensive or midfield roles and making over 250 appearances for the club.

Palmer represents Scotland at international level. He played for the under-19s and under-21s and made his senior debut in March 2019.

Having progressed through the academy, Palmer appeared three times as an unused substitute throughout the 2009–10 season.

Following this, he signed his first-year professional contract

He was also awarded the club's Academy Player of the Year

Palmer made his debut for Wednesday on 10 August 2010 in the League Cup first round match with Bury, which ended in a 1–0 win at Hillsborough

He has scored goals for the club, made assists for other players, scored penalties in penalty shoot outs and has done so much for our community off the pitch too.

He went out on loan to Tranmere Rovers to get some experience under his belt and established himself there in the starting lineup and on his return said: "Reserve team football can be very useful but going out on loan means you can get first team games under your belt. Obviously from my experience, that's the best thing to do and I would advise any young player to do the same because it stands you in good stead. At first I was a bit sceptical of going out on loan and it can be daunting but you've just got to roll with the punches. That's what I did and it has paid off so far"

Liam has played in any position that has been asked of him whether that be right back, left back, wing back, centre half or central midfield.

Liam Palmer grew up supporting Sheffield Wednesday, the team where he eventually started his career

Palmer also set up his own football academy called Palmer School of Excellence, based in Worksop. The aim is to boys and girls of all ages and abilities the opportunity to play football and develop their social skills.

Liam has also played in most of the wins this season

Ah that's ok then, tracking runners doesn't matter.

You're right - you can easily discount all the positives and other attributes and benefits of having Liam Palmer at the club if you're absolutely determined to pour as much hate on him as you can

Just making a point, don't hate anyone. My opinion is he isn't good enough. We see it over and over and then wonder why we don't win games.

Personal i think the issue is up the other end of the pitch.

The lack of goals, we only managed 3 shots on target last night.

That's what makes it so frustrating, isn't it?

We actually defended well for the most part, but once again moments of slackness prove decisive.

Sunderland didn't have to work particularly hard for either of their goals, which is criminal, really.

It's an opinion, I'm allowed one.

I don't rate Wildsmith or Brown either.

Can't you just post the picture about Owlstalk sponsoring him.

Troll off

Only taking the p*ss.

The OP having a moan about Palmer 24 hours later when he wasnt responsible for the goal is weird.

Palmer isn't perfect but can't fault his effort and flexibilty this season.

( Although you posting the picture annoys me but Im easily annoyed).

There's too many of our players who are too nice, countless times a player has run a good 40 yards with the ball with everyone and his dog screaming 'take him out'. Storey should done exactly this, he knew he'd been pulled out of position so number one priority should have been, stop him getting into the box, take one for the team.

How does Dunkley feel?

A centre back is injured, and he doesn't use the centre back on the bench? He brings on a makeshift defender who constantly gets beat at the far post (a key skill for a supposed full back!).

Dunkley will be a free agent soon. I doubt his contract will be renewed.

If you want to blame someone blame the bloke NML  who just came on and could not be arsed to track back, instead he left it to the defence.

Palmer has been mr consistent all season, a central midfielder converted to a right back, then made to play left back then this season centre back he is more consistent in 3 positions than some of the team are in 1.

Exactly, must have watched a different goal to me because what I watched was Mendez-Laing way out of position and Storey getting beaten for pace.

To blame Palmer is ridiculous.

I agree on both Mendez-Laing and Storey, but do you not think Palmer should have beaten Roberts to the ball?

I like Palmer, so nothing against him but I can only assume he was brought on instead of dunkley to be mobile on the floor as they had loads of ratters uptop who were horrible to defend against

but i thought we was going to be picking up or defending more set pieces as the game went along and to replace hutch dunkley was our best option on the bench

Easy to say in hindsight

Plus Dunkley’s been the victim of letting the far post runner slip him many times, he’s a ball winner in the air, but he always struggled tracking runners for us

Not sure if its the injury that’s done him or what, but I’d rather have Palmer on the park over him

Going forward we need a left sided CB if this system is to be consistently successful

Once the balls in the box you can throw a coin for who wins it

Storey needs to just wipe the ball and player out, with no risks taken on letting him turn and run at you

NML was a poor sub mind, his skill set is running in behind and pushing teams back, they were already parked on the edge of the final third

Bringing him on made us unnecessarily vulnerable down that side

Cost us dearly

I've watched it back a few times, Roberts starts off running from outside the box and is at full pelt by the time Liam notices him.

Maybe he could have anticipated it better, but for me the main damage was done by firstly NML not busting a gut to get back, Storey not getting close enough to his man to block the cross......and it was a bloody good goal,
