soldierboyblue
We definitely had some dross in the mid-90s, but the worst ones for me were the big name players on huge wage packets who didn't perform and subsequently sent us down in 2000. Giles De Billde and Wim Jonk have to be top of that list. Went to Coventry the last game of the season and it's the only time I have heard 4000 Wednesdayites turn on the team and sing "Your not fit to wear the shirt". GDB was a mercenary as was Wim Jonk and Sibon, Dave Richards legacy before he feathered his own nest and and became PL Chairman, and sent us into 1 and a half decades of poo . PopePiusX
I've just been looking through the Wikipedia pages for our seasons and on this one:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1993%E2%80%9394_Sheffield_Wednesday_F.C._seasonNumber 27 in our squad is Steven Brown. Who was Steven Brown? Did he win a competition?

Guest hammy1959
Blondeau was pretty diabolical. Also Lance Key, Marc Degryse, Mark Platts, Mike Williams, O'Neil Donaldson and Sanetti were pretty damn grim.

i used to be sc_owl
Didn't Wayne Collins have a nasty injury, and when he came back from it he was a shell of his former self?
Simmo200
Degrryse - Madness he is on this list, absolute genius at times. He didn't stay because his family were homesick, Holland was close enough when PSV came calling. Like the guy above says if we had him a few years earlier it would have been amazing. Liam_Baggies
Andy Pearce - top bloke. Still talks of his time at Wednesday fondly. Tells some great tales about his time at Wednesday - nailing Ian Wright infront of George Graham sticks out. He's not keen on David Pleat though - infact, pretty scathing of Pleat. He claims Pleat ruined everything that Trev built.
McRightSide
Barry Horne - we were in dire straights and that was our answer. Think he was about 62 when we signed him. Should have realized what was coming for the next 15 years Andy Pearce - top bloke. Still talks of his time at Wednesday fondly. paulyates
Many of the players mentioned were unknown players from small clubs, failing to make the grade at premiership level isn't too much of a surprise. I'd be more critical of the players that came for big money, on big wages with big reputations that were complete failures, Hinchcliffe and Sinton spring to mind! Bluesteel
Didn't we get Westwood summer after relegation. I seem to remember Atherton (not everyone's favourite, but imo solid and reliable) was out of contract and we couldn't give him a decent contract so he left for Bradford (who had stayed up). We were desperate for some defenders, any defenders, bradford had us by the goollies and we paid £500k for Westwood. Effectively he cost half a mil plus Atherton. I knew then that we were in for a struggle. I don't think we paid quite that much for him. I hope not! Atherton left on a free with Ian Nolan, srnicek, sonner etc

It shows how times have changed really. Mercenary players were fairly new then. Nowadays they are everywhere
Bluesteel
Hichcliffes dead balls and penalties were spot on too. But he always limped off after.
viva hate
Didn't Wayne Collins have a nasty injury, and when he came back from it he was a shell of his former self? nevthelodgemoorowl
Some of those mentioned lacked the talent but tried their hearts out. But for sheer 'couldn't give a tossness' I will select Wim Jonk. Not only poor for us but a fookin Parasite.
The Dukeries Owl
David Pleat really did have an eye for a good player. The trouble was he was looking out of the other eye most of the time
Bluesteel
I remember Wayne Collins scoring a good goal down at Southampton and oneil Donaldson scoring one at home to Liverpool. A lot of our players were just very average, relying on one or two players to win the game after waddle, hirst, bright and Sheridan went. We were only willing to pay for average players but got bargains for carbone and Di canio. Sadly our luck ran out with de bilde and sibon Edited September 7, 2015 by Bluesteel
