When did you 1st hear," Barmy army" chant

Recommended Posts

United started singing it just after they won their last major trophy...OBVIOUSLY

Late 80's! Probably around 88.
Anyone who says different is talking rubbish.
Wilkinson's Barmy Army...it used to go in for ages and it was quite tedious.

To be honest, there were a few "barmy armies" around at that time mostly under the command of the likes of Mussolini and Hirohito.  ;-)

First time I remember it vividly was at the League Cup quarter final vs Coventry at Highfield Road........absolutely amazing evening. Reyt performance by both team and fans that night. Sky Blues didn't know what hit them that night. Got home afterwards, turned the TV on and the Americans were giving Baghdad a pummelling in the first gulf war.

Try France Russia and England who had the largest armies in 1925

Though I would like to think not so barmy.

(PS: it was more of a dig at that being the era when the pigs won their last major trophy).

Actually, did it start off with one person doing the "Wilkinsons" and then everyone else doing the Barmy Army bit?

Swindon at home in 90/91 season was first for me, went on for about an hour. Certainly we did it before England's cricket fans adopted it as their own.
