DJ getting it right at last?

Recommended Posts

I agree about the birmingham first half but for a variety of reasons, injuries , strange selections, loans coming in we have not repeated it and this made dj change the formation.

I think playing 3 central midfielders suits the players we have. However it is difficult to just change the system which is why i reckon if we stick with it there is a lot more improvement to come. The main issue is getting enough players forward. I thought this was much better on friday and will get better still the more we play it.

The strong spine of the team was back - lleara, semedo and COG were strong which they needed to be. Maybe we'll not need them in other lower intensity games but they wore the preverbial on their sleeve friday

I think Semedo is a much better player with Llera in the team. They are big mates and seem to drive each other on and lets face it both players need to play with passion and spirit to be at their best.

I thought our best players on Friday were Barkley and Bothroyd

Both players unfairly written off by a large percentage of Owlstalkers.

The midfield trio actually worked on Friday night.

Semedo was allowed to do what he is good at and I liked the passing and interchanging between Barkley and Corry.

We just need more attacking threat in my opinion however we were so unlucky not to either score more or win on Friday.

yes - it was good to see and they made the leeds trio look very average. I hope McCabe can step into Barkley's place if he goes back to Everton

I was delighted by the passion, effort and determination I saw on Friday from our players.

One player who I thought put an honest shift in was Dan Jones as well. We all know he isn't the best player we've ever had but I thought he was good on Friday.

Corry looks a bit special though - was worried when I saw his name in the starting 11 but he looked great.

Friday was impressive. We outplayed a Leeds side that could easily go up this season.

There was so much positive movement that 4-5-1 was very effective. Gave us cover defensively while at the same time we were effective going forward.

Agree with all of this.

We played with a renewed vigour and enthusiasm that had been missing in some of our recent home performances.

I don't MASSIVEly rate Dan Jones, but I'd rather have him at left back than the decidedly mediocre Mattock.

Corry was terrific and seemed to help get the best out of Barkley.

The two of them seemed to be on the same wavelength.

I thought Wednesday were great on Friday. I think the start we've had (although its earl days) will hamper us and I think we'll finish mid to lower table but they showed enough Friday to say they won't be in the poo poo at the end of season. I think we lack a striker with real pace, I think cog should play, I have never rated jones but thought he was good, I think llera should play, I'm worried about centre mid, cos its young / loaned etc. would like to get something season long with Barkley or we need to sign someone.

Bothroyd was superb on Friday. Just not sure that there's a lot of goals in the team with him out wide and cog up front.

Would like a pacey option upfront when its not working and don't think we have that, in hindsight rodri was a bizarre signing cos he doesn't have the attributes that were short of upfront

Sorry this is about football

Was impressed by the whole team out there on Friday, in particular 2 players I think were unfairly dumped or dropped too quickly:

Llera was immense, lucky to be on the pitch at the end tbf, but for me a captain's level performance he stood up and dished back in spades the aggression and in your face nastiness that surrounds Warnock's teams. For me that type of commitment lifts the crowd and the rest of the team.

CoG I think we can all agree this lad lacks a bit of pace but imo His strength and commitment links up the team. The way he shrugged off the flying karate assault by brown was inspiring, many players would still be rolling around now after that but he stood up and watched whilst that snivelling rat rolled around trying to claim he'd been the one fouled, what a complete personification of the tw@ that was

I'm glad DJ finally swallowed his pride and realised that Llera and CoG need to be in the team

Liera, in my humble opinion, was not anything like the villain that he was painted to be by the TV coverage.

Essentially this boiled down to two events, both in the first half:

- The Michael Brown event was one where Liera could have got into trouble, but if he had suffered any worse trouble than Brown it would have been a travesty. Brown didn't fancy tracking the big centre half and potentially having to deal with an aerial ball where he would have come off worse so when Liera started his run Brown grabbed him to stop the run. Then repeat previous action. At the third attempt when Brown did this again Liera became frustrated and pushed out - which resulted in his arm coming into contact with Brown's face. He didn't elbow him, or give him a forearm smash, but he did raise his hands and that was a mistake - but Brown was clearly the aggressor in the confrontation and Liera's mistake was in allowing him to wind him up enough to take a risk. Then Brown went to ground like a sack of ... wait a minute I don't want to misuse a cliche (you get my point)

- The Becchio event was a forward losing the ball, falling forward and a defender lifting his arms to protect himself from any impact from Beccio's fall. I was amazed that anyone on TV - much less an ex-pro like Beagrie (he wouldn't have any axe to grind here, would he?) - would make any issue of this. It happens all the time in Sunday football, where over-reactions are not exactly unknown, and passes by without incident because both parties understand what has happened is nothing sinister.

I agree that Liera and COG were very impressive. My only worry with COG is that we need more goal threat alongside him - his contribution is mainly in other vital areas, particularly in enabling us to keep hold of the ball at times when we need time for support to arrive, and in a 4-5-1 formation we need to get others up and around him who can score more than the team on Friday seem capable of doing. I also worry about hasty, panicky clearances: but on the whole a great performance and one I thoroughly enjoyed (from what I observed of the players on the pitch).

I would like to agree, and certainly do, that the whole side played well, be we are still well short on whats needed to make an impression in this league. The five in midfield give us an opportunity to control games in the way we couldn't before. Bothroyd and Barkley were class, Corry too was impressive in patches, but we are lacking up front. In this division we will need to do more than just putting in a shift I'm afraid.

Llera's physical presence was his undoing, it made the incident look far worse than what it was

Brown was out of his depth and tried to salvage something out of a situation he was never going to win...........typical ex-pig tbh
