San Marino has a population that you could fit inside Hillsborough. They are never going to come even close to qualifying. How can you justify the environmental impact of the entire England entourage flying to places like Andorra and San Marino for games so utterly pointless? From a development perspective they will have learnt nothing tonight.

There needs to be a special league for these micro nations to compete in.

How many of these micro nations are there? Who do you class as a micro nation?

I can think of about 5. That’s not enough for them to go and do their own thing. And what would be the end goal of this micro competition?

They could have a league that takes place alongside European qualifying with the likes of Andorra, Liechtenstein, Gibraltar and even Jersey. They won't ever improve playing against nations who have 85% possession.

Shall we say any country with a population of less than 100,000?

Well for a start they could actually get over the halfway line, attack the opposition and maybe even score. Their players aren’t learning anything from just being waltzed past like dummies and conceding 10 goals. The games have zero sporting credibility and fans are being asked to shell out on flights and hotels for games against sides who would struggle against Maltby Miners. It’s a farce.

They’re never going to improve to the level they give England a game, so that argument is redundant imo

Since 1987 San Marino have played 185 games and won……1

It is a total waste of time for all concerned for them to be playing teams from countries with 50-100 times their population. This isn’t a dig at San Marino, it’s just common sense and sporting integrity.

And it’s particularly absurd when we should be looking to reduce pointless air travel.

They’ve got a worse record of coming from behind to win a game than Wednesday

But if we create a mini league of the worlds smallest nations, what about the air miles and environmental impact?

They are also literally in a mini league in the Nations League.

Gibraltar, San Marino and Liechtenstein all in the same group

Might as well do the same for the Euros tbh, along with Andorra and the Faroe Islands. I think they all have a population that would easily fit inside Wembley. Winner of their group makes it to the play offs. They’d probably get beaten at that point every time, but at least they’d have a few more competitive games. Putting them in with the big boys is just a waste of time for everyone

Make them get the train lol

But I dare say the entourage and supporters following San Marino to Andorra will be a fraction of that from countries like England.

Utterly pointless these games. I think qualifying should be shortened and have unseeded nations have to do a pre-qualifying competition (a bit like the FA Cup) before they then join the main qualification.

For example, August - Feb is a pre-qualifying competition with the lowest ranked nations. March to November / December is the main qualification in groups of four (each team playing six games) and do a similar format with winners qualifying automatically and runners up into a playoff.
