As has been pointed out there have been some cracking signings but some of the lists are selective.

During CC,s reign we have also paid fees for Hunt, McCugan, Wiggins, Hooper, Forestieri, Mattias, Joao, Jones,...............................but for me its the money wasted on loan fees and wages for the likes of  Sogou, Lachmann, Emmanuelson, Turner, Kean , Price, Sasso , Bennett , Lopez , McGeady, Buckley , Mcmanaman , etc that have hamstrung us.

That's not a wholly fair list.  Lopez was an excellent loan signing.  Would love to have kept him. Bennett did fine as LB back up.  Sasso was ok as a back up centre half. Kean was pre CC. Lachmann was so early in the CC reign and in the days of the committee I doubt CC had much of a role.  Price was broadly ok as a reserve keeper.

In short. Yes I think it has been really bad since the close of the 2016 January window.

Our wembley squad was excellent, we'd got a few quality signings in that all fit the bill of attacking aggressive football.

What was lacking was the bully/muscle in midfield, that everyone agreed we needed.

We didn't get that player and still haven't. In my opinion we haven't improved enough since Wembley having spent £20m - 30m, and goodness knows how much the wage bill has increased!!!

Anyone ripping on our transfer policy is completely and demonstrably out to lunch, in my opinion:

Bannan is here on a free.

Fletcher is here on a free.

Pudil is here on a free.

George Boyd is here on a free.

Ross Wallace is here on a free.

Into the paid transfers, Reach was the best left back in the Championship last month by the numbers.

Van Aken looks like he'll develop into outright star.

Hunt was brought in, and does good work.  Hooper has been outstanding.  FF is here for a song, and has been a great goal scorer.

Unless you're the type that is desperately searching for any excuse to knock the club and our current manager, our transfer policy from 2015 has actually been outstanding.

I'm not overly concerned about churning through the odd McGugan, Urby, Melo, or Matias along the way; and I'm not particularly sure why anyone would be in the first place.  High potential upside signings that didn't work out.  C'est la vie.

And the reason we got them for free is because we are paying them stupid wages.

It is clear we need someone in before next window. The concentration of players we get from a few teams seems that our scouting is anything other than comprehensive.

Agree with the OP.

We've spent a bit, but not that much compared to other clubs really.

According to TransferMarkt website, of the 18 clubs who have been in the Championship 2 years running now, 7 have spent more money on transfers than us (Villa, Wolves, Fulham, Norwich, Derby, Birmingham and Leeds). We've only spent fractionally more than Bristol C and Reading in the last 2 years too.

Some of those clubs have sold players for fortunes which we have not done.

Worth noting that Emanuelson cost the club a couple of million in wages.

Only on Owlstalk would someone describe our recruitment in the last 2 years as outstanding.

:duntmatter:

Half of our regular starting lineup are players coming from the PL, here on free transfers.

I know we didn't bring in Mbappe, Boateng, and Matic, but some of us do live in the real world.

No such thing as a free transfer in football. Yes no transfer fee paid but that means the player can demand a whopping signing on fee and higher wages.

Fletcher was reported to get a £1m signing on fee and £40k per week wages as no transfer fee was paid for him.

And?

Four years prior, Sunderland paid ~£13 mil for him according to Transfermarkt.

Players poached from the Premier League have higher wage demands than some nobody from the lower leagues.

Was making the point that there is no such thing as a free transfer in football. Just because Fletcher, Bannan, Boyd didn't command a transfer fee doesn't make them inexpensive signings.

Play of final team was made up of

Westwood (Gray), Hunt (Roeder), Lees (Gray), Loovens (Gray), Pudil (Roeder), Wallace (Roeder), Hutchinson (Gray), Lee (Gray), Bannan (Roeder), Forestieri (Roeder), Hooper (Roeder)

since then we have signed

Fletcher (free but reported £30k+ a week), Kean (flop), Abdi (£4m + big wages never plays = flop), Pudil (on permanent for reported £2m for a 30+ in last year of contract over paid and has since been mostly poor), Jones (another £2m fee mfor a bit part player), Sasso (on a free - barely ever played), Reach (£5m for a play that was worth £2-3m on just starting to come good but not a £5m player yet), Urby (expensive flop), Morgan Fox (£600,000 and a player for the future maybe), Sam Winnall (£500,000 + £18k a week weages to not play), Rhodes on loan initially costing (£2m and £40k a week then permanent for another £6m - so far been a flop but might be changing), Buckley (never fit = flop), Mcmanan (other expensive flop), Boyd (free but reported 325k a week only play 3 games and been injured), Van Aken (reporterly R4m and gets dropped for 50% fit Loovens)

Add to this we have offered 3 year deals to Nuihu who never plays and Looven who is that far over the hill he is nearly down the whole of the other side.

Then the future of the club that won the youth league last year Stobbs - 1 yr deal, Penney - 1 yr deal, clare - 1 year deal, hirst no deal.

When we have a fully fit squad it reads as above with Reach coming in for Pudil. So how anyone can say since Roeder left and the play off final we have improved the team much be smoking some pretty strong skunk

But it is not just the recruitment it is the squad management we are carrying 10 players too many we have players who should be moved on or out on loan but we have no one stepping up to sort it.

The manager say he has nothing to do with it, the chairman tell us the manager picks the player and he signs then, but no one seem to manage the agents, squad, contracts, injuries etc - this is why the club have issues with FFP - Poor recruitment, poor squad management and no one has a clue who does what.

Calls our transfer record in the last 2 years outstanding and accuses me of not living in the real world.

Someone needs to climb down off his high unicorn.
