Do You Remember Our Incredible Defence From Last Season?

Recommended Posts

Wow. Great season so far. I reckon it's gonna get better too. Loads round me yesterday were saying the same, we can feel it. It's got that aura about it. Something is stirring and it's something big.

Said this to a mate last week. I dont feel like we're quite there yet, but you can see we are going to get better and better.... thats the scary thing.

The difference this time is we have a squad with cover for every position,so obviously injuries are no longer an excuse. Things are developing nicely and regardless of whether we end up being promoted we are on the up...exciting times.

We've had to use the squad quite a lot, especially in defence, so to be only one goal worse off than this time last season is very impressive. We've been far from having a settled back five for much of the season:

Pudil 25 league appearances

Hunt 24

Loovens 22

Lees 20

Westwood 21

Palmer 10

Sasso 10

Wildsmith 7

Turner 7

Price 5

Hutchinson has played CB on 6 occasions, too.

No of goals conceded in last ten league games, working backwards, is:

0-1-1-1-0-2-0-1-0-1

ie 0.7/game

which really isn't bad at all, especially so when mostly done without Tom Lees.

More qualitatively, last season's defensive record was to a large extent the result of stellar goalkeeping performances.  KW was MoM more often than not, which tells you something about the side.  This season, keepers have been relatively underworked.

Some interesting observations there.

Over the same period we've scored 21 = 2.1 per game. Gives us a net GD of +1.4

Extrapolate forward - should end up with a +37 GD

Last seasons incredible defence?....

I remember four 0-0 's at home in a row.....absolute dreadful, durge football. Give me 4-3 anyday.

You remember those four 0-0s in a row? They were the result of great defending. Conceding 12 goals in those games would have been more entertaining and would have given us more points, but the defending wouldn't have been so hot.

The point I was making is that we're now playing much more attacking football but we're not actually conceding many more goals at all.
