And we get ridiculed for turning down Cantona..

Recommended Posts

Ah, I love re-telling this gag.

Basically, United were on the verge of signing Maradonna. Unfortunately, the deal fell through when, at the medical, they discovered he was circumcised. Everyone knows you have to be a complete pr!ck to play for Sheffield United.

He was cover story on fourfourtwo a couple of years ago and confirmed this to be true, him and another youngster all ready to go then fell through with no exanation. Doubt it was because of money because even Maradonna excepted that Sabella was higher profile at the time.

I don't think we ever turned Cantona down, Francis just wanted to see him playing on grass because he'd only watched him at Arena, his hesitation resulted in Cantona shooting up M1 to dirty Leeds.

Cantona player in a full scale practice game so Francis could have a look at him. The match had to be played on Astro turf because of the weather at the time. Cantina scored a hat trick.

Cantona played in the seven a side game at the Arena and that same evening was in Josephine's with a number of Leeds United players. That didn't happen by coincidence, and Leeds was always the destination for Cantona. There was never any chance of him joining Wednesday, and people need to stop flogging this dead horse.

Wrong. Cantona wasn't in Josephine's and neither was Leslie Ash. Make of that what you will.

Sorry mate, my nephew worked for Dave Allen for many years, and uncle Dave, if staff were needed at Josies would take people from one of his casino's, if possible, to cover for missing staff at the nightclub.

On that particular night my nephew was working on the door at Josephine's and Cantona and a number of Leeds United players were in evidence. There was no mention of Leslie Ash, although I do have a story regarding that saga, from the mouth of a former Wednesday and Leeds player whose name I wont mention on here.

During his trial (on grass), United asked Maradonna to show them his best moves.

All went well as he dribbled past 10 men and rounded the keeper, but they were astonished to then see him stop, pick the ball up, and thump it into the back of the net with his right hand.

It was at this point United ended their interest in Maradonna, concluding that he was from a South American pygmy tribe, had mental issues, and would be forever suspended because of his liking for using his hands.

Boca Juniors spent many years trying to coach this out of him, but sadly he never entirely lost the inclination to use his hands instead of his feet.

And not a lot of people know that.

True story.

Trev, you're obviously not old enough to have seen Edson Arantes do Nascimento play. I've been watching football since the early 1950's and that particular player is the greatest I've seen in my lifetime.

Or Pele to his mates..........

Lot lighter on the ears and the typing fingers mate
