And we get ridiculed for turning down Cantona..

Recommended Posts

£200,000 was a lot of money in 1978.  Prob £3m in todays terms.  Trev Francis was first £1m player in 1978 so it was a fifth of the record.

And Sheff Utd were just a Div Two club then.  i.e. 2nd tier.

Attempt to ridicule the Blades fail.

Nothing to see here- move along.

Sorry mate, my nephew worked for Dave Allen for many years, and uncle Dave, if staff were needed at Josies would take people from one of his casino's, if possible, to cover for missing staff at the nightclub.

On that particular night my nephew was working on the door at Josephine's and Cantona and a number of Leeds United players were in evidence. There was no mention of Leslie Ash, although I do have a story regarding that saga, from the mouth of a former Wednesday and Leeds player whose name I wont mention on here.

Mate? Do we know each other? Mind you, mate is preferable to the awful, "fella".

When you had the sense of humour bypass, did they remove your memory too?

Interesting read but does nothing to eradicate the ridicule. Sounds like Cantona was prepared to sign and thats why he took exception.

Francis's comment that we didn't really need another striker was nonsense, Hirsty was our only world class striker (injured sporadically this season, and at the time Cantona was on trial) supported by Williams and Jemson (also injured following his car crash). Seems like Francis and the board had no ambition to win the title that season, yet a couple of years later happy to waste big money on Sinton, Ingesson etc.

Not too sure about the squad being on Div 2 wages either. King, Sheridan, Woods, Palmer, Worthington, Nilsson, Pearson, Shirtliff, Hirst all joined when we were in the top flight.

And we maintained this squad when we were in a league below. Name me a current side who can drop a divison and keep their best players without massive operating losses-legitimately.

Francis was an awesome manager for me-had the best footballing team I have seen at s6 and I never bought the "took over big rons team" because the majority of my favourite players from that era:

Walker

Woods

Waddle

Bright

Warhurst

And a few others.....

Were bought by francis.

Dont get me wrong I think he had maybe taken us downwards but id take flipping13th in the top flight now.

Also remember we missed out on europe because of heysel the season he took charge (yes I know ron won the cup that would have took us there) and but for the width of a post for warhurst would have.won the fa cup

Doesn't deserve the flack he gets does tricky trev and still refers to wednesday as "us" and "we" even now when he commentates

Ah, I love re-telling this gag.

Basically, United were on the verge of signing Maradonna. Unfortunately, the deal fell through when, at the medical, they discovered he was circumcised. Everyone knows you have to be a complete pr!ck to play for Sheffield United.

Do they really check things like that in a medical? It's a bit invasive don't you think?

Trev, you're obviously not old enough to have seen Edson Arantes do Nascimento play. I've been watching football since the early 1950's and that particular player is the greatest I've seen in my lifetime.

Same here.  I saw Pele three times live(twice at Hillsbro).  And he didn't do a great deal in any of the games.  But I never saw Maradonna unfortunately- who was arguably even better.

But it's like comparing apples and oranges.  Pointless.

Meant to put pineapples and pomegranates..... always got confused with those.

Nah Pele was better than the pair of them
