I know a few people struggling ( very badly) with gambling addiction

It can create massive issues and devstating problems for families and friendships

Here's a bit of information everyone should read

Hope it helps

WHAT IS COMPULSIVE GAMBLING?

There are many and varying interpretations of compulsive gambling. The explanation that seems most acceptable to GA members is that compulsive gambling is an illness, progressive in its nature, which can never be cured, but can be arrested.

Before coming to GA, many compulsive gamblers thought of themselves as morally weak or just “no good". The GA concept is that the compulsive gambler is a very sick person who can recover by following a very simple programme, to the best of his or her own ability that has proved successful for thousands of other men and women with a similar problem.

WHAT IS THE FIRST THING A COMPULSIVE GAMBLER OUGHT TO DO IN ORDER TO STOP GAMBLING?

To accept the fact that compulsive gambling is a progressive illness and to have the desire to get well. Our experience has shown that the GA programme will always work for anyone who wants to stop gambling. It will seldom work for the man or woman who cannot, or will not, squarely face the facts about this illness.

Only you can make that decision. Most people turn to GA when they become willing to admit that gambling has them licked. Also, in GA a compulsive gambler is described as a person whose gambling has caused growing and continuing problems in many departments of life.

Many GA members went through terrifying experiences before they were ready to accept help. Others were faced with a slow, subtle deterioration which finally brought them to the point of admitting defeat.

WHO CAN JOIN GA?

There is only one requirement for membership of GA: you must want to stop your own gambling.

DO I NEED TO BOOK?

No. Just go to any meeting at the time and address indicated online, and someone should greet you.

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?

Absolutely nothing: just yourself and an open mind.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

GA does not charge anyone for attending meetings. That said, each Group and the Fellowship as a whole does incur expenses (e.g. rentals for meeting-places, and the printing and distribution of literature) which must be covered by its members, who are free to give as much or as little as they desire.

WHAT IS ANONYMITY?

In GA a member only discloses their first name. The names of attendees and what they say are not repeated outside the meeting. Anonymity has great spiritual and practical value within the Fellowship, and also attracts new members who feel there is a stigma attached to compulsive gambling.

WHO RUNS GA?

GA is run by compulsive gamblers for compulsive gamblers.

There is no central government and little formal organisation. There are no officers or executives wielding authority over the Fellowship or individuals.

Certain jobs must be done to ensure that GA continues to function effectively. In undertaking a task, a member may acquire a title, but this is used only to designate an area of service. Those who accept these responsibilities are directly accountable to those they serve.

IS GA A RELIGIOUS SOCIETY?

No. GA is composed of people from many religious faiths, along with agnostics and atheists.

The GA Recovery Programme advocates the acceptance of certain spiritual values, but one’s religion and religious beliefs are not relevant.

Thanks for posting some good information.

Also - people say it's a choice, but there are certain conditions like ADHD where the brain works in a way that defies rational thought, and often leads to gambling addiction in otherwise very smart people, who just don't have the executive function capacity to not be impulsive.

I never got into any desperate issues with gambling, as I seemed to be able to retain some sense of the financial cost - however, I did have to use GAMSTOP to give myself a 5 year ban from online gambling.

If anyone is struggling, and hasn't done so - take the issue out of your hands (and away from your fingertips) and look into GAMSTOP. It's easy to set up. I still have the odd flutter, but there's something sobering about having to take the effort of getting ready to go out and walking to the bookies.... knowing the bet is 10-20 minutes away rather than instant is a big help in making better decisions.

I'm really not down with seeing betting companies associated with Wednesday like this. Another black mark against Chansiri.

I would like it if one of the supporters groups could raise this with the club!

I get where people are coming from but...

Sky Bet Championship

Every club in the division is sponsored by a gambling company.

Sorry but all that does is prove the point that this insidious side of life is engrained when it shouldn't be

The sooner we move away from having gambling, alcohol sponsors in football the better

I can see them eradicating it like they have done with cigarette companies

i don’t disagree but what about

Fast Food

Cars (ICE not electric)

Shopping (some people are addicted to buying stuff from Amazon ;-) )

Airlines

Moral arguments could be levelled against all the above, where do we draw the line, what would be left as an acceptable sponsor.

Can you control who advertise on Owlstalk?  If you can would you block alcohol and gambling if it meant this site loses revenue?

How many of you that post on here have never had a bet of one form or another? The first thing one notices around most gropunds willbe abetting kiosk, and it will invariably be surrounded!

If you are going to stop Betting Sponsorship, you can say goodbye to the vast majority of sports! And the unemployment rate will shoot up to a tremendous rate. All horseracing, F1, a lot of soccer, Rugby (both codes), and much of TV will close.

Gambling is an addiction, yes, but so is watching Wednesday. Stopping advertising of tobacco products did little to affect the number of people who smoke. I used to be a 50-a-day smoker, but gave up. Not because someone got advertising banned, but because the little known, and much underused thing called Common Sense advised me

All advertising has negative connotations . Consumerism fuels crime as not everyone can afford the latest TV or phone so because of advertising crime happens and no one would care if we had sony and their product all over the stadium and shirts . Where do you want to stop . Someone thieving to feed their own or someone else's need for a new item is fine but someone betting money they can't afford that no matter what they'd bet anyway is bad .

You're missing the point entirely

The tobacco advertising ban wasn't aimed at you at all. And it certainly wasn't intended to encourage you to stop.

It was designed to prevent young people from ever starting.
