To be fair to the original poster, I think that’s where he used to play for Chelsea before all his injuries started. May be wrong though.

Yeah I just wondered how often the poster had seen him play in that position to confidently state it’s his best position.

Can’t have been any more than five times for Chelsea and nine times for Forest as that was all he started in English football before he joined us... according to wiki.

If he's either always suspended or injured; then he's a waste of a wage.

He hasn't got the engine or fitness to play wing back on a regular basis.

What happened to the old sweeper role - Franco Baresi and all that.  Lees and Venancio (If he signs) next to him.  It would be a pretty solid back 3

I think under Jos he'll be a squad player. Whatever you think of his ability (at his best he's a fantastic player in my opinion) the simple fact is he's going to miss a number of matches. If we are to challenge for the top 6 again we need to have 7/8 regulars who are going to play 40 odd games.

2015-16 we had one player who started over 40 games ....2016-17 we had two  so I think having 7 or 8 isn't that crucial ........

Well some may argue that we didn't get promoted in those seasons. Regardless of that let's be honest Sam isn't going to play enough matches for us to rely on him is he?

depends on where you play him and whether the Spanish guy can get him fit ....I wouldn't be writing him off just yet .

I'm not writing him off at all. I'm saying I can't see Jos building a team with him as a key part of it. Lets not forget he'll miss 5/6 gams through suspension as well. He isn't like the other players who've had injuries this year he has long standing issues with his knees. It's not just a case of 'getting him fit'.

if they've sent him to Barcelona to see a specialist and the costs that would incur then they must be doing it in the hope that the bloke can sort him out . ...if jos can handle him right there no reason to think he cant play 30 odd games like he did last season ...hooper is in the same situation as he cant stay fit in his time here but i'll bet when he's available he'll be part of the team .

The thing is though isn't this the third specialist he's seen about it? Maybe he will be the one that can crack it and get him fit and if so good on him and Sam. With Hooper he's been mismanaged over the last 18 months and I would expect him to come back fit and firing.

If we play 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 and if he’s fully fit, I’d play him in the middle of the back 3. He would be brilliant in this position.

I love him in defensive midfield but he’s a red card and injury waiting to happen.

If he was to play in the back 3, I would definitely play him in the middle. No brainer.

If have him on the right of a back three with Lees in the middle and Van Aken to the left. Hutchinson and Van Aken are better at bringing the ball out than Lees.

Twice??..33 last season 25 season before...probs more than Hooper and Fletcher and Keiron ...

While I will admit the comment was tounge in cheek.

The point l was trying to make was.

How often is he 100% fit. Not 80% or 70% or even just fit enough so we can maybe give him half an hour.

FFS.

This. He would be able to make sorties forward into the heart of midfield.

The stint he had at centre back is probably the most impressed I have been with him.

Otherwise he would be a very good player to come on in the last 15mins and sit in front of the back four.

But he is a very important member of this team and he is a MUST to be here next season.

Plays with a big fat cigar on when he’s at Centre Back, he makes it look easy. I’d play him there (RHS in a back 3). I wouldn’t even consider him for any other position for the reasons below:

1) Hopefully centre back will keep him fitter for longer and he doesn’t seem to fly into those stupid tackles as he does when he’s playing midfield.

2) For this level he’s too good at centre back.

There's no question that Sam's a good footballer however his fitness record is appalling and does the manager trust him to get on with the football and not get in to bother? I've got a feeling that we're in last chance saloon with Sam's career here. I really hope for his sake that he has a great rehab in the summer and he's ready to go.......I fear the worst though.

One lesson we've learnt over the last couple of years is that we can't afford to have any players been sent on to the pitch with a niggle and the handbrake on. If your not 100% you don't play....IMO.
