International XI

With the talk on another thread of whether Nilsson was our best ever foreign player, it got me thinking who our all-time overseas XI would be. I've used non-British as the qualification for overseas. If you think having Irish players is cheating (especially as Sheridan was from Manchester), then I've suggested alternatives to the Irish players in brackets.

GK: Kieran Westwood (Pavel Srnicek)

RB: Roland Nilsson

LB: Dan Petrescu

CB: Emerson Thome

CB: Dejan Stefanovic

RM: Niclas Alexandersson

LM: John Harkes

CM: Glenn Whelan (Wim Jonk)

CM: John Sheridan (Ante Mirocevic)

AM: Marc Degryse

CF: Paolo Di Canio

Manager: Carlos Carvalhal

Not Rudi enough for you? Or think it could do with a bit of Magic Bougherra, Foresteri or Benito Carbone then post your alternative teams below. Maybe Petrescu at left back is cheating as he never played there but otherwise all I could think of was Helan or Pudil.

Shame on you for suggesting Wim Jonk.

him and De Bilde were the biggest mercenaries ever!

Forgot about Danny sonner, definitely shake your hand on that

If we are having Danny Sonner then we might aswell put in the best left back we have probably ever had.

Bit harsh on Rudi that, he was a decent player. Rocky Lekaj would be a potential Norweigan replacement on the wing.

Yeah, but when he could be bothered he was a class above everyone else we had at that time (apart from Des and Di Canio). E.g. the 3-1 over Man Utd at Hillsboro the season they did the treble when Jonk and Sonner (I kid ye not) outplayed Keane and Scholes.

His style didn't suit our tactics in a lot of the games, and true, he took one brief look at the Championship and thought b*gger this, I'll take my fat pay check and retire to a windmill in Holland, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and say there were enough good performances in that first season to make the cut.

Surprised you didn't mention Gerald sibon but I'd have benito carbone over di canio anytime but they were class players

I have a soft spot for Sibon, he was one of the few positives for those first couple of seasons back in the Championship but I think even he would admit he flopped in the Premier League.

I found Carbone a frustrating player. He would have 3 or 4 games a season where he was an absolute star (I remember two goals against Forest that were like guided missiles where the ball seemed to change speed and direction in mid-air) but there were quite a lot of games where he went missing too. Di Canio for me was a class above him, his skill and composure, but also his work-rate were exceptional. It's a shame he could be such a tool on (and off) the field along with it, but to be fair, if he hadn't been such a high maintenance player he'd probably have never come to Wednesday (or Celtic, West Ham...) in the first place. His previous clubs were Lazio, Juventus, Napoli and AC Milan and I don't think many of them sold him because he wasn't talented enough it was just that he was too much of a pain to manage off the field.

I move a lot of concrete on the QVC.

Aaah.  Forgot about him.

Though not sure he or Bart-Man would qualify.  If the OP considers Manchester born players to be international because they represented another country, the converse should also apply.

Both Wilf and CBW represented England at junior levels.

Good knowledge - never knew he was originally German and called Schmidt. I'll allow both, as presumably they were both born with other nationalities and became British citizens when they were growing up.

Can't disagree with anything you wrote there but sibon and carbone stayed with us for a few year but di canio left as soon as he got a chance but I don't have the luxury of watching out team every week so can only say what I see when I do

Specifically regarding Jonk, yes he was a mercenary. However, people forget how good he was in his first season. He had 49 caps for Holland and was one of the best players we had. The year after he lost heart, after we got relegated he was a joke.
