Which Person At The Club Decides?

Recommended Posts

Right so we've established it's between Sondico and the Club which is good cos I thought flipping Gok Wan assigned colours randomly to the football league teams.

But the question was- which person(s) at the club...?

Do we have a commercial director? Ad imagine directors (Aldo, Milan and Mama) take feedback from various departments and their needs and from advisors then decide from a number of designs put forward by Sondico to meet their brief. Used to be Andy Daykin and Peter Pridmore who were directors of retail and commercial but dunno now under new owner. Like i said all along, the board decide.

Marketing, Retail and some football people.

Sondico will know that we basically wear a blue a white striped top as this is widely known. They will turn up with 4 or 5 designs and there will be a small panel of people (4 or 5 perhaps) from marketing and higher management who will decide which one they prefer taking into account our preferences as fans and previous sales. Shorts and sock will be decided at the same time but aren't as involved from a design point of view. Details like any embellishments and fonts/ colours for numbers and names will also be discussed during this meeting. Possible further meetings along the way with mock-ups will happen until one of the board members signs off the final design. That's how we did it at work. It is a lot easier now-a-days with design software as it could all be done over the t'internet.

The manufacturer only has a say in so much as price control.

Like any purchaser Supplier relationship you can have exactly what you want as long as you are prepared to pay for it.

Remember the days when the club sent someone down to Suggs for 11 dozen shirts in blue and white striped shirts with Red numbers 1-11 on the back.

The colour clash shirts (WBA away) would be ordered during the week of the game.

Yup, exactly. Thanks Nev.

I doubt that any contract would ever stipulate that the club had to choose certain colours. We often had new designs mocked up in different options [blue/black shorts, different socks etc] and ultimately we could always make the call as which way we wanted to go.

It makes no odds to the manufacturer really - if there is any price difference in producing different designs/colours then they'll pass this on to the club so they won't be out of pocket.

Contract agreements will cover things like cost per unit/minimum order quantities/upfront payments and so on but I think a manufacturer would be pretty foolish to try and dictate what colour a club had to go for.

Haven't seen you posting for a while. Good to see you back. Do you still work for the club?

Just had a reply from Peter Pridmore - Head of Retail at the club:

It is usually the manager and chairman that ultimately have the final say, but this would usual also take into account fan feedback

No - left about 3 years ago. MM disbanded the small marketing team we had shortly after he came in. A decision was also made around that time that staff stop posting on forums like this - hence the lack of input from Deejayone for a long while too.

If somebody at the club doesn't have the decency to tell anybody his actual surname, then I don't think he should be allowed to choose the shorts colour.

Anyway, how do you get employed like that?

'What's your name?'

'It's, er, it's Mr X'

'It's not, is it? It's Geoff Clunge, it says here on your CV.'

'No, it's definitely Mr Geoff X'.

'Not Mr Geoff Clunge?'

'No. Definitely not'

'Geoff?'

'Yes?'

'Sod off Geoff'.
