Should Bywater go back in goal?

Let's get one thing straight Bywater isn't anywhere near the same class as Kirkland.

But its amazing how big our fan base has got,, was this your first time at Hillsborough Stevie Wonder?

We really are MASSIVE!

Reading the comments on here, our need for a quality CB should SB go back in goal? Maybe just in the short term? By all accounts Kirkland is playing really well, however, we're shipping two goals a game and you know their's going to be a time where we are going to pummel a team, hit posts and cross bars and the ball is not going to go in for us.

We've done brilliant so far by outscoring the last two teams, but how long can this go on for before luck turns against us? For all his faults, Bywater always comes across as an excellent organizer and maybe that's what our defence needs at the moment. Sure, we're may be looking for a new CB, but in the meantime should Bywater get his chance? How about in the cup to see what he can do and if their's any improvements. It seems that we're crying out for a leader at the back.

How do people feel that Kirkland does at commanding his box and organizing the defence?

You are a pig of the highest order!

Kirkland has been a revelation from his shot stopping to his accuracy from kicking.

IF he stays fit he is without doubt a premiership keeper.

Dave Jones tek a bow son! What a signing!

Kirkland has been outstanding. Dropping him would be the silliest thing any Sheffield Wednesday manager has done since Trevor Francis said he'd like to see Eric Cantona play on grass.

playing greame lee upfront?

No. He has kept us in the game several times. Next.

'Bystander' not good at commanding his area or anything. Kirkland has that ability to lead his back four. That would be a huge mistake putting Stephen back in, Kirkland is up there with best players on the pitch.

Not to mention some of the saves he pulls off, unreal.

I thought u was going to say your ITK mate had told u joe hart was signing for us then for a second

Whilst I totally disagree with Maples comments. Don't call him a pig. Not on.

He can have an opinion - although on this occasion it's totally wrong - however, no need to even say what you did.

We've let in 2 goals in each of 4 competitive games with Kirkland in goal.

With Bywater in goal that would probably be nearer 3 a game.

I think people have to realize that if we play an attacking side that gets goals, there will be spaces left at the back. If we were winning 1-0 instead of 3-2 would people still complain?

Kirkland should stay in goal. Think his command of his goal area and apparent communication and talking to defence (not that I sit close enough to hear) are positives, and certainly on commanding his 18 yard area he is in front of Bywater (I would say by about 12 yards).

The number of goals conceded is a bit of a concern, but a few things worth considering. Firstly, DJ has said he knows no other way than to be positive when he sets his team up, so we need to expect to concede on occassions (especially in a midfield that contains two out and out wingers). The trick is to score one more than the opposition, if we do that more often than not I'll be happy.

Secondly, not all goals conceded can just be pin-pointed at the goalkeeper or defense, it can come down to how possession was lost and what the shape of the team was at that point. For example, the penalty that was concdeded against Birmingham, yes it was a clumsy tackle from Reda, but it started with Maguire losing possession in the final third when we had bodies committed forward. Likewise, against Millwall, a misplaced pass by Semedo and then McCabe going to ground to try and rectify the situation quickly left our back four exposed.

Thirdly, as a defensive unit (keeper, back four, midfield four, and even whichever striker is asked to drop deeper when the opposition have the ball) are still learning how to play with each other. Not just when we have the ball but also when the opposition have the ball.

I would be more concerned if we were being torn apart at every opportunity. Admittedly the first halves against Oldham and Derby were a little hairy, but that had as much to do with how often we gave away the ball as it did with how well we coped when the opposition had the ball. The better we get at keeping the ball, the less defending we have to do, this is what DJ means by being a work in progress. 7 points from the first 3 games will do very nicely thank you - enjoy the ride!

If it wasn't for Kirkland we wouldn't be sitting 2nd in the league at the moment. The goals we've conceded have all come from defensive lapses so having Bywater in there wouldn't make any sense. Kirkland has made some match winning saves so far and can only get better once the back four start to communicate and understand each other a bit more. We do need to strenghen in this area though and i'm sure DJ is fully aware of this and will do everything in order to ensure that we sort this problem area out.
