Maple Staple
Reading the comments on here, our need for a quality CB should SB go back in goal? Maybe just in the short term? By all accounts Kirkland is playing really well, however, we're shipping two goals a game and you know their's going to be a time where we are going to pummel a team, hit posts and cross bars and the ball is not going to go in for us. We've done brilliant so far by outscoring the last two teams, but how long can this go on for before luck turns against us? For all his faults, Bywater always comes across as an excellent organizer and maybe that's what our defence needs at the moment. Sure, we're may be looking for a new CB, but in the meantime should Bywater get his chance? How about in the cup to see what he can do and if their's any improvements. It seems that we're crying out for a leader at the back. How do people feel that Kirkland does at commanding his box and organizing the defence? TrickyTrev
Kirkland has been outstanding. Dropping him would be the silliest thing any Sheffield Wednesday manager has done since Trevor Francis said he'd like to see Eric Cantona play on grass. TheGodfather
In terms of pure ability, I think Kirkland is the best player in our squad. We'd be absolutely loopy to do anything other than play him every chance we get.

Maple Staple
I agree, but pure ability is one thing, being able to organize and marshall your defence is an important part of being a goalkeeper. You don't need as much ability if you cut off the number of shots you have to save and get the defenders in front of you defending?
s12swfc
what about all the shots kirklands saved, to enable us to make come backs, would bywater have saved them, is it 6 of one and half a dozen of the other, personally i thought the guys done ok,that said im also a fan of bywater,
MirfieldOwl
Credit to Bywater - good keeper. But Kirkland has been outstanding.
edmontonowl
Kirkland has been as responsible for our results so far as our goal scorers. He's kept us in the game v, Oldham, v. Derby, v. Brum, and v. Millwall. Basically I'd say the keeping issue is a non-issue. It's the defence that needs sorting

Guest tha_knows
Kept us in both the Derby and Brum games, he's been a great signing, nothing wrong with giving Bywater a game in the cup prehaps but Kirkland gets the jersey against Palace. I also think we need to get Jameson out on loan, possibly a league 2 side to get some games under his belt

Guest chuckie4570
Kirkland is our number one and he's been brilliant between the sticks so far this season.
senwar
This place never ceases to amaze me. Even in your post maple you put 'by all accounts he's playing really well'. Yes he is. He's certainly not the reason we've conceded the goals we have.

Chris_B_SWFC
Not a dig at Bywater, but no. Kirkland hasn't been at fault for any of our conceded goals really.
Swiss Toni
Madness! We need someone to command the back four, not the area. Kirkland is being kept busy right now because nobody is taking charge at the back and it's not the keepers job to do that.
Thurnscoe_OWL
Kirkland is number 1 but I think Bywater might be playing on tuesday against fulham, which isn't a bad thing as it will give Kirkland a rest.
Maple Staple
But the question is why has Kirkland had to make these great saves? Keeping us in games? He seems a very good keeper, but SB last season wasn't called "The Bystander" for nothing. How many clean sheets did he have? When you remove a voice/presence from the back and suddenly it's quiet back there and nobody is organizing, pointing out dangers ...... uncertainty creeps in as nobody is sure what the others are doing. The goalkeeper coordinates things like a conductor, he sees the dangers, and moves people around. Does Kirkland do this, is he that type of goalkeeper or is he a bit quiet and just does his thing and lets the defence do their's?
