Guest Garryswfcowl72
Imagine going in the 93/94 season the bookies favourites to win the then premiership after signing Des Walker then a bit Later Andy Sinton turning Arsenal down in the process . Yes football has moved on massively since then but that squad massively under achieved apart from the “ waddle game “ which for me still today was the most complete WEDNESDAY performance ever . The first half of that season we was so inconsistent then came good in the second half a bit like last season . At least we won a prem steel city derby that season

Mcguigan
Not sure why we were the bookies favourites. We were closer to the relegation places than the European places in 92/93 and 25 points behind the Champions.

This is where the club is at now unfortunately.

leftpeg
When getting to the FA cup and League cup final was considered a "Jackpot" in financial terms, where as now it's an inconvenience to most prem sides and puts "too much pressure on their players" That is the really big difference, back then a club like ours could compete for the best players, now if you do not have the Russian, Saudi or American multi Billionaires bankrolling you, forget it. 4

We weren't the favourites, nobody other than the OP said we were, in the article posted Francis rightly says that we'd be making signings with a view to challenging. Most Chelsea fans don't go to games, or indeed live in the UK, or even Europe. "Not proper fans", it will be said, but while per capita yield isn't the same as for an STH who buys kits, is a sucker for all kinds of upsells, it is non-negligible. I doubt there are many or any fans who like being in League 1. But equally I doubt there are many who think we will ever be a top six side again. The absolute best case is being a Brighton or Southampton type outfit, and that's at present a very long way away indeed.
alanharper
Meanwhile, in an alternate universe where Andy Sinton chose to sign for Arsenal - whilst the Gunners languish in League One playing at a decaying Highbury after almost a quarter of a century outside the top flight, there are shoes off in the car park at the Hillsborough Emirates Stadium and Owlstalk goes into meltdown as Wednesday narrowly fail to finish in the top four again. The multiple title winning glory days of the 2000s at S6 under Wenger seem a long time ago, with only four measly FA Cup wins since then. "It hasn't been the same since Bergkamp left", moans Brian from High Green on Praise or Grumble. 2 2

I used to read the magazine 90 minutes as a kid, I remember they tipped us to win the league in 93/94. it wasn’t a bad season all in all. We had a weird run of playing Watson and jemson up front as Hirst and bright were crocked, with Ryan Jones in midfield, and looked surprisingly good !

Honestly, if we started modeling our self on how Southampton recovered from League 1 to where they are now I would be delighted with that. Their scouting is top rate, the way the club is run is a benchmark for others that are not bankrolled by an entire country. 1
