Gary Hooper to see London specialist

cant see a specialist telling him to play on regardless so probably question of surgery now or later................ so really there's no question

good, clever, player but not enough game time from him, seems to struggle with his weight which could be down to both body and mindset and that affects his fitness and in turn his willingness to put the effort in

if he's here next season should accept we get prob 20 games out of him and use him 'tactically' but we need players who can be relied upon for 30 to 40 games

Carlos was managing his fitness and frequently spoke about it. Carlos left and we then over played him and so he got injured - arguably same happened with Hutchinson.

At this level, he is an excellent footballer.

One of the best in the division.

That isn't stretching things at all.

He's been a consistent performer for us throughout his time here. The issue is ensuring he's on the pitch, and not injured off it.

People have very short memories - He hasn’t been consistent - he has had purple patches but struggled when partnered with FF.

TBF that can be put down to poor team setup by CC.

But what is the point of having player who can only play 20 matches a season?

We keep doing this over and over again.

Hooper has always been delicate and had problems with hamstring and other muscle related injuries. Apparently has similar hip problem to Lee, which requires substantial rest or injury will return. After fiasco with Lee we are managing Hooper injury correctly.

I know we are in the backwoods compared to London ,But surely we have specialist  up here.

Some specialists have a gravitas above the rest - and in this country they are often based in London

And visiting specialists from abroad generally go to London due it's plethora of state of the art clinics and hospitals

It depends on the exact nature of the injury as to who a player will see

We might be managing his injury correctly but we didn't manage his fitness correctly by overplaying him

I don't want to get into a ***-for-tat argument, because its clear you don't rate Hooper and thats that.

But, since Hooper got his first goal for the club, he's never gone more than six games without scoring. Not only that, he's been a constant high level performer which offers far more to the side other than goals.

But, like I said earlier (and agreed with you), he doesn't play enough. Which is why, for me, we should write him off for this season, and ensure he's 100% and injury-free when pre-season begins.

If we get Hooper, Bannan and Forestieri all starting 40 matches next season, we'll not be far off. Thats how important those three are to us.

Yes, we really overplayed him after Carlos left.

He played about 25 mins following Carlos going

I think it’s your memory.

The ONLY time Hooper has failed to shine is partnering FF in a front two. Look it up. His record with all our other strikers is VERY consistent.

But yes, his injury record is rightly a concern. Though I think it now obvious for all to see that Carlos has done almost all of our regulars a huge disservice, and hopefully we will get more reliability from them under Jos’s more professional management.

Probably ok.

Amazing how much better players become when they aren’t playing.

He is costing us a fortune yet we are getting around half a seasons wort of appearances - another croc.

This sort of thing really needs to stop and we need players who can play 35 games plus.

I accept your point but look at the facts, before Gary Hooper got injured he was one of a few that had actually justified his wage this season. I was the first to question his wage and contribution when he arrived and at points last season but credit to him this year he was the one who was stepping up and getting the goals. It's not a case of becoming better by not playing the fact is when available he should always play, he's that good.

Hooper scores goals in bursts.

He can , and has, had spells here without scoring. And that has nothing to do with FF.

As with others coming back from injury It will be interesting to see how Jos handles him when we do see him again.

The injury issues at the club, most would agree is one of the worst we've ever had and has played a huge part in our poor season overall, along with the fitness of the players too, which you could say go hand in hand.

But looking at the players we've missed the most, should we have expected anything else this season after 2 gruelling play off seasons?

Hooper - struggled for games and fitness early on and clearly needed to shed some lbs when he arrived

Hutch - needs wrapping up in cotton wool and always an injury (or red card) waiting to happen

Lee - struggled last season with injuries which seemed to be pretty serious

Fletcher - over the past 6 seasons has averaged 30 games per season, but racked up over 40 for us last season

To me, it looks as if we've just relied way too much on players who at some point were bound to break down. All you need is to add 2 more key members of the team in Bannan and FF to the injury list and we can't expect anymore than what we've been served up this season.

Going to be an interesting summer both with who's staying and who we bring in for cover.

I do rate him but I don’t agree he is excellent - he’d be in the Prem if he was that good.  He has had purple patches but he hasnt been able to maintain consistent levels for reasons we all know.

Plus no one is sure how/ where JL will play him.

Your last paragraph says it all: a big if.  The players you mention will be older and therefore more injury prone

To challenge we’ll need at lest 35 games out of each - something I don’t think we’ll get.

Reach is a good marker - hardly missed a game if I recollect and the player of what has been a grim season - but it’s players like him that are the future imo.

As far as I am aware he has hip injury which was not his normal muscular problems so what you have stated does not necessary follow.

Exactly my point, many of our injuries have not been muscular problems and so to put our injuries down to lack of fitness is probably not correct. Apart from those where it fits their agenda.

I understand squad is about 200lb lighter than it was when Jos took over.

Guest Maxine

I saw Hooper down at the training ground this afternoon he looked very fit. I wanted to ask him how he was but I didn't want to sound like an idiot so I didn't.

I just smiled and walked past, kept it cool but he did look very well.

Agree with you re Hooper, you only have to watch Hooper during the course of a match, on and off the ball, to appreciate that he really is an excellent footballer.

lol

My memory is fine thanks

Hooper has blown hot and cold here and been called all sorts of things under the sun when he hasn’t got on the score sheet.

He really struggled with FF upfront but to say that’s the only time he hasn’t shone is somewhat of an exaggeration.

That’s said he should be playing regularly upfront - but I just don’t think we will ever get a decent run of games out of him...probably one of the reasons Rhodes was bought in.

if Joao and Dave continue to produce the goods and stay fit it will also change the pecking order here..
