Jos will sign a left-back/wing-back in the summer so he won't fit there. And he'll struggle getting into the midfield when Lee, Hutch, and Bannan are there. Gonna be tough for Adam next year. He's been brilliant this season, helped admittedly by the amount of injuries.

Yeah because lee and Hutchinson are going to play loads of games next season .....

Unbelievable.

Adam Reach CAN tackle, he doesn't have some sort of medical condition that prevents him from making a tackle, he chooses not to tackle in case he hurts himself, at school we called it nesh.

He's a professional footballer, god knows how he got to this point being so shy of a tackle. He's not a bad player but if he doesn't start showing more commitment to the sport then he will slowly drop down the leagues.

He's like a boxer with great footwork but doesn't throw punches.

For some tackling is a skill they find easy. Tackling is not a strength of Reach.

Given that it's very unlikely Lee will be fit next season and we all know Hutchinson is unlikely to play 46 games for 1 reason or another then Reach looks very likely to be needed in the middle

Without sounding like a stuck record, it should have been apparent to those in the know (ie coaching staff) that Adam Reach was never going to make a top winger/wing back/full back.

As I have said often enough, in my opinion, he doesn't have the pace or trickery to play left wing.  He doesn't have the tenacity to play full back and I think it is just folly to think that he could produce consistent displays at wing back when he doesn't have excellent ability in either aspect of the role.  Many many moons ago I said he should have been Kieran Lee's understudy.  Integral to the way we played under Carlos was KL's ability to make up the 5th attacker.  Arriving in the box, getting beyond the striker(s), linking defensive midfield to attack.  I didn't think KL was perfect either.  He tends to drift into forward positions, when sometimes I felt we needed somebody akin to Carlton, big, rangey long stride who would stretch opposition midfielders.

Now I have no doubt when Adam Reach was a U16, U18 player, his long stride and good engine would have seen him gallop past most full backs.  He probably got pigeon holed into that unfortunate box that he's left footed, therefore he must play down the left.  The modern day championship/premier league full back though, generally, is quick, agile and as good going forward as they are going back.  So Adam Reach spends more of his time tracking back and less time trying to figure out the full back.  He will certainly make a few full backs look foolish, those that lack pace or positional sense, but I doubt if he will truly make an opposition team make a plan to deal with him like for instance, Forestieri or Knockaert.

My point being this, had it been recognised that with his long stride, ability to finish, the fact that against slow turning CM's and DCM's this would have magnified his ability to lose markers, his shooting ability and his excellent stamina, and made him KL's understudy, we would have had continuity when KL got injured.  I've said many times before in a midfield you should have as near as possible, a floater, a spreader, a buzzer and a runner.  We had the buzzer in Hutchinson, we had the spreader in Bannan, the floaters in Wallace and Kieran Lee, who also provided running ability.  Without KL we lost our runner...someone willing to do the hard yards to get from box to box.  Adam Reach was the only viable replacement with the right qualities for this spot.

Adam Reach will probably be a 6-7/10 each week playing on the left.  He will be a 7-8/10 most weeks playing in a central role, at this level anyway.  Our first goal on Saturday came from Reach getting into the box on the end of a cross.  If he had been out on the left who would have been making that run?  Bannan, Hutchinson, Jones, Butterfield, Pelupessy?  Maybe Sean Clare, probably KL.  Look at Joao's second against Derby.  When the ball breaks to Reach in the centre circle he plays it out wide and his first instinct is to attack the space between midfield and defenders.  Not follow the pass and look for the return ball, not drop deep to give another option between the centre halves.  He runs forward and provides the extra attacker.

Sorry its so long winded, but its a bug bear.  His physical attributes and his instincts make him a central midfielder, not a winger.  Don't get me wrong, he's not perfect.  He's go to work on his first touch, his decision making and his physicality. There will be times he will have to fill in on the left.  In a 4-2-3-1 I wouldn't mind seeing him anywhere along that line of 3, at least he would be expected to get into the box and support the striker.  He would be taking the full back where he didn't want to go, on his weaker side and into the penalty box.  The full back wants to push him outside and crowd him out knowing he hasn't got the pace to skin him.  He could even play the second DCM in a 4-2-3-1, help with the breaking ball and go box to box.  A bit more physicality and he'd be good there.  However, I really don't want to see him out left of a 4-4-2 or as a full back or wing back.

I'd say neg away but....ahh what the hell, laugh away, look bemused at my ramblings.

I don't like us playing wing backs, its a specialist position for which we have nobody who is a specialist and while the likes of Reach could do it, takes away from his attacking game.

I would like us to go 4231 where Reach could fit an anywhere along the attacking 3 behind the striker.

Perfect in a 4-2-3-1

                      Westwood

Hunt.          Lees.         VA.       New

         RoboHutch.       Bannan

Forestireri          Hooper.         Reach

                       Joao

I'd swap Reach and FF round.

Players are not concrete bollards. Look at Manchester City, their players pop up all over the place.

I'm afraid we have too many "pigeonholers" on here.

That they do... But they pop up all over the place fulfilling the role and responsibility they are given and those are matched to their attributes.

Not defensively good enough for LB

Struggled at LW due to lack of pace or a trick

Mobiliy & pace looked good for a CM ... Especially when compared to Jones & Butterfield

I wish I had your ability to be so concise! I might not have carpal tunnel.....

He's an odd one. Looked good initially when he moved central, but the last few games I've been frustrated by him more than anything.

Not tracking his man.

Getting lost just watching play.
Opting for a 35 yard shot instead of playing someone in.

Giving it away a lot, including letting himself get robbed in our own area against Leeds (which they should have scored from) despite having a day and a half to clear it.

His level has dropped for me. Needs to pick it back up again.

This. At the end of the day he has had a good season in comparison to others. Still he is overrated in my opinion and can only really play centrally as he is slow and cannot tackle. I'm not slagging him off at all but he is limited in what he can do and needs  to be more consistent in doing the things he is good at. If we buy a good playmaker and a couple of wing backs in the summer - as you would expect I can't see him playing as much next season. Shame but I just don't think he is good enough for what we are trying to ultimately achieve.

Dunno. Rhodes has done a decent impression of one often enough this season.

People complain about lack of movement in the team then want to take Reach out of the centre where he is the only player we have who actually runs past defenders and frightens them a bit.

He might have missed the chance that Joao set up at the weekend but nobody else in our squad other than Lee who would have made that run .

Joao would have had to pass it backwards.

Without Lee or Reach in the centre I could play centre half against us, everything is in front of you.
