Sheffield Wednesday - Have we got the best name in English football?

Our name is just so different to other football clubs. It's cool, mysterious, and I quite often get asked by other fans (I live in London) how we got our name.

 

I just love our name.

Are there any other clubs whose name you think is a bit different?

 

I've always thought Crystal Palace is a pretty funky name.

It's a great name because it is unique. There are many Uniteds, Cities, Rovers, Rangers, Towns, Wanderers and Counties etc. but there is only one Wednesday.

 

Of course you can also make a case for other clubs with unique suffixes such as:

 

Aston Villa

Woolwich (as they originally were) Arsenal

Plymouth Argyle

Tottenham Hotspur

 

But it does make us (and them) a little bit special, it's just that we are even more special!

It's not only a unique name but it's a name that pretty much guarantees that we will never see a situation like Hull City were in with their owner wanting to make his team stand out from all the other clubs called City!

Unique is definitely the right word to describe it. 

 

Honourable mentions too for Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur. I've always liked Forest's name.

It is not only unique it tells a narrative of the clubs history and reminds us all where it started so many years ago. I absolutely love it.

I always call Manchester United 'united' it's pretty instinctive now but it started because it didn't half annoy dem blades

I love the name just not when it's abbreviated to Sheff Wed. Look it's either Sheffield Wednesday or simply The Wednesday.

Abergavenny Thursday - formed 1927, played in 3rd division Welsh League, folded 2013 . Think they were inspired by our name.

Sheffield Wednesday is a cool name, when I meet people on my travels they always ask about the name, its a good story to tell
