Middlewood Road: Has it always been our training ground?

Recommended Posts

The Peacock overlooking Totley is the earliest knowledge of anything like a regular facility used by The Wednesday Football Club in the 1880's/90's period.

They would go up there sometimes  twice a week during the season either by carriage or on foot where they would engage in some sort of physical activity.

It is said the late lunch would always be the same Steak with loads of Onions in rich gravy, Mashed potato piled high and two veg.

After this the entire team would descend on Sheffield to attend one of the numerous Theatres in the City. (Was Sheffield a City then ?)

Wednesday for a short period stood accused of being a group of phantom trumpers as the theatre clientele complained of the smell whenever the Wednesday boys came to a show. The trainer of the time was forced to speak to the proprietor of The Peacock and the Onion content was greatly reduced.

True Story.

As a schoolkid I used to watch them train at Owlerton stadium from 1958 to about 1962.    You could just walk in and watch the sessions.

I remember seeing Albert Quixall just before he went to Man Utd for a British record fee.  Also vivid memories of Springett, Kay, Fantham, Swan in training sessions...... particularly Fantham swearing at Springett for some reason.

All 5 players were England internationals, although Kay was at Everton when he won his only cap.

Don't know where else they might have trained.

Sheffield got city status in 1893 although I'm sure that it was nowt to do with us and purely the responsibility of Dem Blades!
