Lewis Baker gone?

Recommended Posts

This is why premier teams don't need B teams at all. If they want the young players to compete then loan them out to lower league clubs more often instead of wanting the lower league clubs to go bust so they can swallow up there support and make more money and kill football in this country.

Remember we were in the third division not so long ago, what would that mean to the likes of us if we suddenly become man utd b?

After all some clubs have to go to make room, and with our financial worries over the last few years it could have been us

Ridiculous comment. Highly regarded youth player at one of Europe's elite clubs, what homework are you suggesting wasn't done?

Standard owlstalk mentality in this thread - burying a player based on a couple of games and a rumour.

Not really, there are lots of things you have to consider when signing a player, not just ability. Are they going to fit in, how will you utilise them. Anyway, I said if it was true, we don't know that is yet and he will surely be in the squad tonight, given our list of absentees

Yes really.

Are you suggesting we didn't meet with the player, scout or reference him before we signed?

Or that psychometric testing and full psychological background checks should be provided by every player?

Or that it's the clubs fault for knowing whether a player can adapt from London, the premier league and youth football, to Sheffield, the championship and full team football?

This is why prem teams need b teams in lower leagues like they do in Spain

No, they need to offer their talented youth a route into the first team, or leave them to develop at other clubs and buy when ready.

It's called greed. They know the youngsters aren't ready for their use yet, but they don't want anyone else to have them. If the aim is to produce their own talent and become self-sufficient, at some stage they have to bring them through - which they're not doing.

Chelsea send a lot of their youngsters to Holland and Germany. Having spent an obscene £170m (or something like), Man City sent Marcos Lopes to Lille for a year. If Pellegrini isn't prepared to bring Lopes, Pozo and Barker through, their fancy EDS academy is an expensive waste of time.

The best premier loan we have had is Wickham.

Barklay- whilst his skills were unambiguous, his influence on results was largely minimal because he was still too young to know how to raise the team. He is still struggling with how to effectively use his immense talent even now- a way that doesn't diminish the team in other ways.

Baker could be similar. In many ways it would be easier if he were a winger or a striker. Where the only thing he had to concern.himself with was beating the bloke in front of him or hitting it into the net.

Its obvious you don't go to games.

he was by FAR the best player on the pitch when he was playing for us a times, and almost single-handedly beat ipswitch i think (iirc) at home when he scored one.... and started running.

Well I do go to games and watched most of Barclays performances.

The Ipswich game aside, other than showing a lot of skills, his influence on results was minimal.

We did Barclay more of a favour than he did for us.

In fact our results that season improved in the 2nd half once he had gone

That is not to say he is not an incredible talent.

Before people start putting words into my mouth.

Wickham had the benefit of 100 senior apps from his time at Ipswich and Sunderland before coming here; Barkley and Baker were just starting out. When they're that raw, you will have to accept the rough with the smooth. We're guilty of the same thing with Corry and McCabe; bring them in on lengthy contracts, not good enough for our use, their development stalls. Corry's now 24 and with little experience to speak of.

And you are coming from the the standpoint that managers never make mistakes, of course they do, they are only human. Granted some make more than others, Stuart Pearce springs to mind, but if this is true, and at the moment it is still an if, then it's reasonable to question the signing.

Following hot on the heels of Oshilaja and Afobe last year, plus Hope this year, did we really think those moves through? OK they were all young players, and it's often difficult for young players to adapt to new surroundings, but it seems to be a bit of a trend. What about Gary Taylor-Fletcher, weren't we tracking him for months, and yet we send him back at the end of his spell. Rightly so, he wasn't at all what we needed. If money is tight, then it's all the more important that our recruitment is targeted.

At the moment, as I said, it's all hypothetical as he's still with us and will hopefully be in the squad tonight

Undoubtably talented, but his physique reminds me of a young Gerrard....too lightweight for "the mans game". If he turns out to be half the player SG has been, when he beefs up a bit, he'll be a real asset to the game. One to watch for the future I reckon.

Good post. No doubt when a year older, more physically mature and with a years more experience he'll have the OT sages admonishing the rest of us for not recognising his obvious gifts whilst with us.

Even though he was still our leading scorer 4 months after he left
