Stevie May

Recommended Posts

You can't blame May for the fact that it took until 5 mins into the second half before we got a decent cross into the box...how many times did Hope/ Palmer hit the first man when May and Madine had burst a gut to get in the box

May doesn't occupy the box enough. He spends too much time chasing down defenders which is pointless because it has no effect anyway.

Stevie May will be a legend for us IF we can supply him with enough quality balls into the box. Unfortunately at the moment we don't have the players to do this.

What would Hirsty have been like without Waddle, Sheridan etc?

What a ridiculous thing to say! How can we know that May will come good? He's been no better with Kieron Lee in the side and people were stating May would start scoring when both started together. What's the next thing that must happen before May comes good? May needs to spend more time occupying the penalty area if he's any chance of improving and even then we don't know for certain that he'll start scoring.

To compare May to Hirst is wrong.

tired of hearing the 'service' line. decent modern teams defend deep, so you don't get lots of space and the chance to run onto through balls etc

the lad works hard and make good runs

unfortunately he's hardly ever first to the ball or strong enough to hold it up

I sincerely hope he comes good but at present can't see anything to suggest he's going to establish himself at this level

A friend tells me the coaches believe he's a 'late developer' . i hope so. i'd like all our players to be a success

He doesnt need through balls but he does need some kind of accurate pass.

If we want to be a tight unit that doesn't concede many (today not included) then something else has to be sacrificed. I get the impression that it's throwing men forward to support the attack. You do have to feel for whoever plays up front because they generally are working off scraps. Not once do I ever see a ball slid through when May spins off off the last defender. That has to do with the quality of those behind him, not May. He's often having to come deep for the ball because our two CMs are playing too deep. This is another reason why we are hard to score against in general and it's all about finding the right balance. Not sure we have the players who can do both right now.

Why is it? Hirst without the proper service would have been exactly like Stevie May. We need quality service to May then we'll see the player he can be

That's even more ridiculous than your other post. Hirst benefitted from playing with Sheridan and Waddle but he was the type of player that made his own goals also. Hirst is amongst the top three forwards in SWFC history (arguably, the best) May, wel, just isn't.

How old are you? Did you see Hirst play?

What May needs is the kind of balls inbetween the defenders to run onto. Exactly like Watford did time after time today. This where his strength is. Look at his goals in Scotland. All from situations like this. We don't do this therefore we're not playing to his strengths. Therefore he won't score goals. Our midfielders don't have the ability to play such a ball anyway !

the championship is light years ahead of the SPL. far better defenders.

we have the ability to play the ball but opposing teams do not allow the opportunity

He's having to come deep to even see the ball, he plays in behind the defence. Unfortunately every time he makes that run nobody sees it.

Oh stop it FFS! Stuart Gray and May himself need to address his game. He needs to stop chasing everything, stay central and put himself in positions where he can be found. If he's making runs that his teammates can't see then he needs to start making runs his teammates can see - it's better that he makes a run to create a half chance and receives the ball than make a run to create "nailed on" goal but not receive the ball.

I am confident Stevie May will be brilliant for us when he has to stop doing what the current centre midfield and wingers should be doing whilst finding space for himself in front of goal..

The lad's playing in 5 positions and tracking back - time for some of his team mates to take responsibility but yeah until that changes he will be a luxury for some.

He is making runs his team mate can see, he has to go wide or towards them, I didn't think he did too bad in the 10 role towards the end but like heck is he gunna score there.

We push the big man (Atdhe or Gary) up against the defence to bring it down for May to run at the defence, why not bring the big one deeper to either bring it down for lee who can find the wide man or May in the second phase OR flick it over for May to chase.

The goal scorer should not be so deep.
