Highest ever attendance

Recommended Posts

Mine was my very first Wednesday game against Man Utd In 1985, the Kop was heaving, was fantastic, crowd was 48,000 odd and I fell In love with Wednesday that day, beat Man Utd 1.0...was great.

I remember that game well

There was 48,105 there and chapman got the winner

Hillsborough was epic before the seats and with the higher capacity.

If my memory serves me, the biggest attendance I have witnessed at Hillsborough, was the 49.000 or so for the Boxing Day Massacre.

2-2 draw with the Scouse in the League cup was marginally higher.

38k v Wycombe. 4 sides of wednesdayites. not the biggest crowd ever, but the best.

If you are younger than 25 probably.

For me, Highest attendance, 55,000

Everton v Aston Villa League Cup final replay 1977.

Highest for a Wednesday game 49,000 boxing day massacre.

Cup games against Liverpool and Coventry City in 80s were very close to this many.

Those would be exactly mine too. Went to all those.

I went to that game and the replay.

Shelton missed a glorious chance in front of the kop when we were leading 2-1

We got mullered 3-0 in the replay

I was back at Anfield the following season to see us win 2-0 with a remarkable goal from Varadi.

Just a bloke, who used up all his luck in one go when he met his wife.

72,841 17th Feb 1934 Wednesday 2-2 Man City, just on safety one feller died that day at the Kop end. It was his first time watching Wednesday and he came from Lincoln someone had got him the ticket as a treat.

80 years on but RIP feller from Lincoln !

That was indeed the highest ever. My grandad was there and often used to talk about it when I was a kid.

In the sixties the capacity was "limited" to 65k for semi finals for a number of years though, if my memory serves me well.

Singing, "We'll be back, We'll be back, We'll be back".  "We'll be back, We'll be back, We'll be back back back".

Then singing "We said we'd be back, and we are, and we are".

Good times.
