Cambs Owl
My highest attendance was in Nov 1960 when I was a youngster. It was 56,383 against Spurs (we won 2.1). It was also when the present north stand was being built so only three sides of the ground were open. I'm sure there would have been over 60, 000 had it been open. Guest everydays_wednesday
I went to that game and the replay. Shelton missed a glorious chance in front of the kop when we were leading 2-1 We got mullered 3-0 in the replay Singing, "We'll be back, We'll be back, We'll be back". "We'll be back, We'll be back, We'll be back back back". I was back at Anfield the following season to see us win 2-0 with a remarkable goal from Varadi. Then singing "We said we'd be back, and we are, and we are". Good times. Totally agree was amazing.....didn't rush get a hat trick? Was a brilliant goal from the touch line from Varadi the year after.Varadi scored an absolute cracker at Maine Road as well and we won 2-1. Is it me getting old but it's just not the same anymore is it !

fatzooma
2 that stand out for me were Coventry in the cup 1987 and Burnley in the cup 1983. Not the biggest crowds but 40 odd thousand.

I was also at both of these games and I'm sure the Cov game was 52k. Either way it was very full on the kop.
Guest Big Guns
Can't really remember the attendance probably about 35 k but the best atmosphere when we beat chelsea in the 1991 league cup semi sticks in mind and not much does

geriatricowl
I remember a bumper crowd I was in for an FA cup replay against Everton in the 1960's, sure it was well over 60,000, biggest crowd for a league game I've been to was against Spurs 1960/61, was over 58000 that day and we were only using 3 sides of the ground as they were building the North Stand in readiness for the World Cup finals in 66. PeteG_1984
39,000 (give or take) verses Man Utd in early 2000. This was also mine. Also the record attendance at Hillsborough in the all seater era
Guest zipzippy
This does show that upto the late 80's we regularly broke 40/45k crowds. Not sure this has been done since cov in87? The ground was made all sweater in 93 but we have rarely topped 35k since then.

Your memory is playing tricks on you. Only 50,080 in that Everton replay and only 56,363 at that Tottenham game in 50/61. There was a 58,000 against Man U and a 55,000 against Burnley in the FA Cup that season though. There was also a 65,009 against Man U in the FA Cup in 61/62. That might be the one you remember? Lawrie Madden
Mine was my very first Wednesday game against Man Utd In 1985, the Kop was heaving, was fantastic, crowd was 48,000 odd and I fell In love with Wednesday that day, beat Man Utd 1.0...was great. I was on the kop for that match i think it was the season the won something like 13 games on the trot at the start of the season and we were the 1st team to beat them but got no credit because we only beat them cos Robson went off early with his arm hanging off again . Lincs Owl
From Dunsby Owls list... 65,009 Wednesday 0 Man Utd 2 FA Cup 5R 21 Feb 1962 This must be the biggest Hillsbro crowd I've been in. Stood on Tango corner. Too much crushing We lost 2-0. Very disapointed as we had beaten them 7-2 away the previous season in the cup. 72,841 v Manchester City, FA Cup 5th Round, 17 Feb 1934. My best friend's dad was in that crowd.
