Barnes for 38m seems just crazy to me

He's a decent player, but it just shows that the relegated teams (at least for the first few seasons) are still very much in that Premier League bubble.

Even if we weren't run with the business acumen of those pop up shops you see on Fargate, we would still struggle like crazy to compete with these ex-PL sides.

Leicester have brought in around 100 million in transfer fees now?

Yes the PL is softly ring fenced now

A Super League in all but name really.

Yep...to be fair the title race aspect is similar. Even though Newcastle have the money it's going to be tricky to get them competing for the title. It's all by design to keep the power at the traditional top clubs.

Obviously you can’t replace Barnes and Maddison as a second division team, but Leicester have managed to sign quality, will field near enough a Premier League side in all but name, are probably protected from any negative financial consequences and will likely have a promotion party - probably with a league win on 90+ points, without even needing to think about parachute payments.

Bit like when Newcastle came down twice previously. On either occasion there was never a doubt they would win the league and a season in the Championship was barely even a setback. Could say similar about Villa even though they were down here 3 years. Used to think there was no merit in “relegation is a blessing in disguise” but for some clubs it barely registers as an inconvenience.

The PL is a different world these days. There are currently Yanks in Philadelphia decked out in Brentford and Fulham shirts for a friendly which is a bit surreal. Some of them may be Londoners who've gone over there obviously, but neither club ever had away followings that big!

Don’t disagree with your general point about PL being different although worth noting Fulham have a history of signing American players. Doubt we’d get any local fans if this was held in the Far East.
