No chance - if it was England only hosting (which it should be, imo, we could easily host it ourselves without the other countries riding on our coat tails basically for the free qualification) then there'd be an ouside chance, but spreading games around the nations means fewer stadia being used in England so it'll be just the larger, modern grounds being used which are already light years ahead of hillsborough in terms of facilities and capacity.

Think if they are any games in Sheffield it will be at Bramall Lane or more likely not at all.

In last few years when anything like this has come to Sheffield it has been at Bramall Lane.

For example the Rugby League World Cup group game England v Greece in the Autumn is at Bramall Lane.

I think the people in charge at Wednesday are unlikely to be interested if Sheffield was offered a game especially with all the money, organisation and hard work that goes into putting anything like this on.

Euro 2024 in Germany has only 10 host venues.

Assuming we use all the national stadiums.

Wembley

Hampden

Aviva in Dublin

Millennium Stadium

 Windsor Park

it doesn’t leave many to choose.

I would be very surprised if Old Trafford and Anfield were not chosen to host games being home to the 2 most iconic English cubs.

Looks like England and Ireland have the best chance of being selected as hosts for Euro 2028.

With that in mind do we think Hillsborough will be a host venue?

Typically successful bids receive FA and local authority funding though Hillsborough does look like it needs a bit of work?

Thoughts?

No because Hillsborough is a dump

Regardless of the historical cloud hanging over the name of Hillsborough there are a dozen or more new stadia around Britain that would be  light years ahead of us even with the available funding.

Not a hope sadly.

Not a chance, had no investment in the stadium since 1994, There are now 10 stadiums bigger.

the games will be at the national stadiums of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales and probably Old Trafford, St James Park and Spurs/West Hams stadium.

Yeah, I agree. I’d guess at 12 grounds, grouped geographically.

Old Trafford and Anfield would be certs.

I’d guess at something like this:

Group A - Wembley/Spurs

Group B - Hampden/St James’

Group C - Millenium/Villa Park

Group D - Aviva/Another

Group E - Windsor Park/Another

Group F - Old Trafford/Anfield

So I’d say only a couple of spots up for grabs.
Remembering only 2 grounds allowed in same city.

Windsor Park is below the 30k mininum capacity.

They might have one stadium in Yorkshire but would imagine it would go to Elland Road over Hillsborough.

It’s shame because being next to Hillsborough park is ideal for a fan park and we have the transport links to and from the city.

If the WC plans had gone ahead regardless the stadium would definitely be in the running. There was a time when Hillsborough was called the Wembley of the North.

How times have changed eh.

The games of 2028 will be expanded to 32teams according to the BBC this morning.

Good point!

Makes you wonder what Northern Ireland’s part is then?

Do they have a bigger stadium?

They're building a new one in West Belfast (or upgrading one thats already there) I read yesterday to make sure they can take part.

There's also Everton's new stadium I don't think anyone has mentioned which is 52k capacity. We're well down the list both capacity and facility wise.

Not at the moment.

There are plans to build a much delayed GAA stadium for 2024 but it mighnt be built in time! Plus the GAA may tell them to sod off if they ask to use it anyway.

I think that applies to the World Cup but not the Euros, which would mean Arsenal and/or West Ham being possibles as well, plus the new Everton stadium.

This is from the Euro 2020 UEFA guidelines, nothing about the number of stadiums in a city is mentioned (although that was a very different tournament to previous ones with it being held around Europe)

26.01 By 1 March 2018, the associations must submit a list of proposed stadiums to the
UEFA administration for preliminary approval for both the 2018/19 UEFA Nations
League and the 2018-20 European Qualifiers.

26.02 The host association selects the venue for each match from the corresponding list
of proposed stadiums and announces it to the UEFA administration at least 120
days before the match in question.

26.03 When fixing a venue, the host association must take into account the length of
the journey to be undertaken by the visiting team. In principle, the venue for a
match must be no more than a 90-minute bus drive from the nearest
international airport with daily flights from/to other European cities.
