Medical Emergency on North Stand Last Night

Nah. Think there’s a new rule where games have to be stopped if there’s a medical emergency, or it’s just become a thing to signal for the teams medical staff in all scenarios now?

People will point towards a ‘’correlation’’ between Covid/vaccines and these amount of incidents. Of course in this persons case it wasn’t anything to do with it. But before this season, these medical incidents still happened in stadiums.

think about it. 20-24 teams per league. So at least 42 games in the league happening up and down this country alone?? However many thousands upon thousands of fans in these stadiums. Law of averages says that one person is gonna faint/collapse/fall ill and require some sort of extended medical attention.

It just so happens that nowadays it’s broadcasted a lot more cos, for whatever reason, games are being stopped.

Had an old chap fall unconscious sat behind me in a game against Leeds a while back. Hooper scored twice?? Anyway. Game wasn’t stopped and no club doctor needed. In fact I think we scored as the man was being carted off by regular paramedics.

Yup, simple confirmation bias. Remarkably easy to find almost any old random correlations if you go looking for them. Unfortunately too many folks interpret correlation as causation, when in fact they’re not even remotely similar concepts.

Crackers how regular this is happening at grounds all over the country now.

It's really not.

For one, there is a new rule that games will stop if there is a medical emergency.

Also, are we really suggesting that a certain virus and/or it's vaccine is causing an increase in football supporters experiencing medical issues at games?

I mean, if that was the case, then surely we would be seeing it all over the place, in all scenarios?

Nah, they're ignoring the virus that's swept through the population, it's not real and all that jazz. Just a mass genocide by vaccine, which is why deaths are so much higher since the vaccine rolled out....

Some people really can't handle the idea that bad things happen without an evil villain to blame. Usually the same ones going around telling people to stop being snowflakes and complaining that things have "gone too far" because their football match was interrupted for 10 minutes, to potentially save someones life, without a hint of irony

Are these incidents more common or would they have been dealt with by paramedics and the St John's Ambulance rather stopping the game for the team physios?

no idea fella. maybe we just never heard about them before.

Like you say it's probably been happening forever then.

While I appreciate people don’t like the games getting stopped, especially if it turns out not to be too serious. I also like to think that if I was taken ill or worse a friend or family member then someone would come over smartish and help especially if they brought the Defib with them. I extend that sentiment to all The Wednesday Family. I think I can wait 5 minutes till it’s established if it really is an emergency or not.

As an Epilepsy sufferer myself, though fortunately mine is nocturnal, please believe me  that it is far from being pleasant or amusing to either watch or experience.  One of the first thoughts of bystanders is 'Oh He's only drunk'. Far from it. He will be having difficulty breathing, with the possibility of swallowing his tongue. It can happen any time. In fact, people nearby are often more aware of the onset than the sufferer. The initial treatment is primarily to ensure that airways are clear  and  to remove any blockage, put patient in recovery position and ALERT MEDICAL CARE  Pleasedo not attempt to restrain any movement of limbs

I know this may seem far away from the subject of stopping a game, but believe me that an Epileptic seizure can be very serious. and is far more common than people think. Believe me, I know and have experienced both sides of the coin.

I think it would help if the FA or someone had publicised that games are going to be stopped for it, because as far as I'm aware this isn't a new rule this season, its just kind of developed that way whereby people expect it to happen. First game I can remember it happening this season was Newcastle vs Spurs on Sky where Dier stopped playing so they could get attention. It then seemed to start happening every week after that. Because nothing official has been said about it, its left kind of a void where people don't know whats going on, and thats been filled by the anti-vaxxers trying to pin it on the vaccine.

I don't think the game should be stopped every time. Depends what the problem is. If its a heart issue where the de-fibrilator would come in useful I think it should be stopped. Anything else then play on and just let paramedics treat them in the stand. Saving lives is the most important thing but there's too many unnecessary stoppages where its not life threatening.

Thinking about the numbers who die at football matches prior to this coming in, it wasn't many. You'd hear about it too as it would be in the press if someone had sadly passed away.

Don’t they need to stop the game until the problem’s been diagnosed?

I think we need to have (st John’s ambulance) medical teams in each stand.

Im not saying it’s right or wrong but we used to play games where everything continued even when people were taken seriously ill and, on occasion, passed away and, as match spectators, we accepted that.

Sorry if I appear callous but I think this stooping of the game to attend to someone in the stands is getting out of hand now.

in the 80s I had a guy suddenly collapse in the North, row in front of me having an epileptic fit, he was with his wife who said it's ok he'll be fine and he was 20 mins later,  I don't know the answer but perhaps a st john's on call each stand if possible can't be a bad idea

Thanks for your comments.

What amazes me about these incidents is that suddenly everybody becomes an expert. I was a first aid assistant ("HSE Appointed Person") at a sports event when a person in the crowd had an epileptic fit. By the time I got there, one bloke had that patient in a head lock and was trying also to put him in an armlock. This resulted in two casualties instead of the one I expected. I've seen folks rushing for spoons and tyre levers to ram into an unconscious patient's mouth to stop them from "swallowing their tongue" (which is fairly impossible, by the way, although when unconscious the tongue lays across the airways but just tipping the head properly moves it clear).

I had flashbacks just a couple of weeks ago when a bloke tripped and fell onto the gangway half way up the Kop rendering himself KO'ed and he was immediately surrounded by well meaning people trying to add value. Many of these incidents are best served with people making access for the real experts and managing the situation instead of suddenly taking up A&E as a hobby.

L agree with al you say, Mustn;t,  The two most important things are- to make sure the patient is breathing, then , whatever the condition, avoid the tendebcy to crowd around the oatient. Give them plenty of room.. Never try to restrain a perdon suffering an epileptic fit. Their limb and nuscle movements will be far motr aggressive and powerful than yours. It's dostressing tosee. buta fact of life .
