Makes sense

Pep ,klopp, conte, arteta all ex attacking players

Pep, Conte and Arteta were all central midfielders, not strikers by any stretch of the imagination. 80% of managers have traditionally been either central midfielders or defenders - relatively few strikers and wingers, and very few keepers (apart from Zoff and Nuno Esprito Santo).

Our lot since I've been watching have been:

Moore - DC

Pulis - DR/MR

Monk - DC

Lukuhay - ??? (midfielder, apparently)

Carvalhal - CB

Gray - DL mostly

Jones - CB?

Megson - MC

Irvine - AMR

Laws - DR

Sturrock - AMC / ST

Turner - GK

Yorath - CM

Shreeves - AM RL?

Jewell - ST

Wilson -  MR

Pleat - AML? (very slowly on the kerb)

Francis - ST

BFR  - M RL

Wilko - AM RL

Interesting. I wonder if it’s because defenders or midfield captain types already have to do a lot of organising, taking and get a better reading of the game. Strikers perhaps more focusing on how they do individually to beat the defensive tactics. Who knows but must be something to it

Yep, that's exactly my take - wingers, strikers and keepers have a more individualist mindset whereas it'd be a rare centre-half who excelled without thinking constantly about the collective...

Paolo Di Canio

Wasnt to many years ago I would have said never allow PDC to manage Wednesday.

As of Today... I would drive to Rome to bring him back to Hillsborough if DC would give him a chance.

Corbaneu wouldn't have left a PDC team... Unless PDC had chinned him...

lol

The best manager at this club was Central Defender and won the world cup.

I mean of cousre 'Sir 'Jack Charlton, a proper manager.

I understand what you are saying. I was of the same opinion.

You are probably right.

For many years I would look back at the day he pushed the ref over as the day the wheels came off at Wednesday.

However, I do  think he could do a job, at this level with these players.

I guess he will always be divisive at this club, so in that case he's not the answer.

A general discussion.

Kevin Keegan at Newcastle? Ryan Lowe at PNE?

Most managers seem to me to be defenders with a don't lose mindset.

Yes the set up at S5 stinks but when was the last time we had an attacking minded boss?

Burton Albion manager was not a bad striker either.

derby county manager midfielder or striker you decide.

Klopp began his playing career as a striker too.

I am sure there are many more.

ALL the best managers were Workmanlike players. They had to learn how to play football, unlike the Best's, B Charlton, Cryuff etc.

There are the exceptions of course in every walk of life

But Cruyff was a fantastic manager!

Going on the pre match build up to the 1993 FA Cup semi final, casting my mind back to Viv Anderson running through the squad, you could also list Carlton Palmer as a striker who went on to manage.

”Defender…. Come midfielder…. Come attacker”
