Many thanks BRS a really touching story, understandable given attitudes how the stigma in mental health always weighs to heavily to let the milk of human kindness shine through.

Really sad that the World Cup had to be the trigger, not for treatment, but imprisonment !

Homelessness is not new before the time the World Cup Groups were put on in Sheffield we had a homeless Lady who practically lived in the Sheffield Bus station in Pond Street.

Everyone knew her as Nora. Nora was completely harmless. However, her mental state would not allow anyone to walk past her without shouting out some profanity or other nonsense at them. No problem, we all knew Nora. The City elders, who had given very little credence to the plight of Nora prior to the World Cup organised a section for her under the Mental Health Act in order that our visiting fans would not be offended. So Nora became a guest of Middlewood Hospital for the duration of the World Cup group stages along with other ladies detained their for years; Their only crime becoming pregnant and cast out by their families.

I don't recall seeing much of Nora after 66, obviously passed on now, but would love to know.

Pond Street Nora had relatives around Gleadless Common, they tried to help her but to no avail. There was also the guy in the RAF greatcoat who lived in the Peace Gardens and Lady Galoshe, who's aim in life appeared to be to terrorise shoppers in Marks & Spencer on Fargate. They were known as ladies and gentlemen of the road (a posh name for tramps), you will still see a man and woman living in the underpass across from Waitrose, this has happened for centuries, sad that it is.

Which might explain (in part) how far we've fallen financially.

I move a lot of concrete on the QVC.

Are you suggesting Man Utd and Villa would knock their grounds if they could afford to?

Can't speak for Villa, but Man Utd had sufficient room around their stadium to expand the footprint and then generate considerably more revenue. Wednesday aren't in that position.

Neither were Derby, Boro, Sunderland etc. So they moved, generated more money and haven't spent the last 17 years anywhere near as un-workable as we have been.

Went to all the Hillsborough world Cup games. Greatest memory has to be the Swiss supporters with their cow bells and horns. Great atmosphere in Sheffield throughout, until the Uruguayan team turned up !! W Germany by far the best team we saw in the Sheffield section with Beckenbauer, Haller, Overath and Uwe Seeler outstanding.

I was lucky enough to see two games at Hillsborough, the opening tie in which West Germany beat Switzerland 5-0(this included the first goal scored in the competition as England had tied 0-0 with Uraguay the night before)and the quarter final West Germany v Uraguay.

The Quater final tickets came courtesy of the Uraguayan team who were staying at the Hallam Towers hotel. My sister was working on the reception and managed to wangle them plus autographs of the team, pennants and badges all of which I still have.

The site is not the issue, it's the boobies that have been in charge that's the problem.
