Should Antonio and Helan swap wings?

Recommended Posts

Everyone seems to agree that the problem with our wingers isn’t pace or power, but the fact they can’t cross.  So does it make sense to keep playing them on their “natural” sides?

On Tuesday night, especially as the game got stretched late on both players managed to beat their man a couple of times, cut inside only to have a really weak shot with their wrong foot.

As we’re clearly not going to get a lot of goals from their quality crossing into the box why not get them cutting inside, running at the defence and shooting or playing through balls instead?

This not only creates a new angle of attack but would allow our full backs to find space on the outside to put in crosses, as they are better crossers than our wingers at the moment.

PS: Usual apology for trying to raise the tone and actual talk about tactics on a football forum

always favoured by line venturing pacy wingers at this and lower levels,

thought that even if they can't cross, they should be coached to drill

it hardish and lowish and after 4 crosses or so we would get on the end of at least one.

they don't really do that tho, so may as well try them cutting in,

especially as the gap between mid and att can be too big.

the cm's can stay fairly deepish to cover advancing full backs

who can help provide the natural width.

the wingers can act almost as inside forwards when cutting in,

might work best in a 4-3-3/4-5-1/4-2-3-1 away from home,

but would like to see fryatt and nu together at home in a 4-4-2.

it's worth a try at least and would make opponents think twice.

might favour antonio especially as he seems to have lost a little pace

to beat some full backs to by line.

I think swapping wings is only really useful for wingers who lack pace but have a good shot brunt being a good example. With pacy wingers the space is usually down the line when they cut inside they tend to run into more traffic and then skill is more important than pace.

Still don't think it hurts though if thinks aren't going well keeps the opponents on there toes.

Every good club in Europe that plays with wingers gives them about 20 minutes on their preferred wing then they swap them for 10 to 15 minutes, it works so well, it confuses the defence and also gives the wingers a new lease of life against someone different. With the wingers we have this would be so obvious to do.
