Popular Post leftpeg
We got nowt, and were already skint by the time we went down. Took us years to recover from that, combined with the Charterhouse fiasco, the Digital TV deal collapse it is no surprise that at one point we were basically owned and kept running by the good grace of the Co-op bank who for obvious reasons couldn't wait to get out of that arrangement, but at least committed to not screwing us over in the process. Even before Chancer came along our financial and commercial side has been a mess, From 92 onwards we basically just signed for the short term, threw good money after bad and constantly chased our losses like gambling addicts. The one time we actually had some decent governance was when Wilko came in as a consultant to try and fix us, and even he couldn't, although to be fair, Mandaric did what he said, steadied us and left us with better prospects than when he came in. But more like at previous clubs, the people he sold to ended up toileting the club. False dawns, bad timing and dealing with the fallout of short term policies have been the theme of our club, we never plan for the medium or long term, just live hand to mouth and when we reach the end of a cycle, spend the next 10 years paying for it.
NIOwl
Guaranteed they'll be done away with the season we finally make it to the Prem. 1

I've seen loads of comments to this effect on here over the years. Unless I'm missing something, parachute payments weren't introduced until 2006-07 - six years after we were relegated.
Morepork
My understanding is we were awarded £1500 and someone in their infinite wisdom used it to buy an actual parachute........typical Wednesday.

Castleford Owl
Yeah we missed it by a good 6 or 7 years. FFP on the other hand was introduced at the same time we thought we had a rich owner...

Yes, it was because of the Heysel Stadium tragedy that English clubs were banned from European competitions. But EUFA didn’t punish themselves for 1) Allowing a European Cup Final to be played in a such a decrepit stadium. 2) Allowing the selling of tickets to Juventus fans in the same area as where Liverpool fans were. Add them together….recipe for disaster.

We missed out on Europe twice. 1985-6 when we finished 5th. 1990-1 when we won the league cup. A limited number of English clubs were allowed back into Europe at the time, but league cup winners missed out. Prior to the ban, the winners had a place. But not always unlucky Alf. 1990-1 we only finished 3rd in the 2nd division behind Oldham and WHU. But we went up automatically. Notts County won the playoffs. Reason was the top division was expanding by two teams.
