Maybe but all clubs attendances were down.

Even the biggest clubs like Man U and Liverpool weld only get 30-35k for an average game on a Saturday.
The London clubs like Arsenal and Spurs would get 23k for an average Saturday game.

Think it is a combination of factors high unemployment, hooliganism, football being very unfashionable, grounds being run down.

Strange as ticket prices were OK then, makes you wonder if prices make  as much difference as we think.

A number of interesting points come out of the program notes, thanks for sharing @REDOWL.

One was the need for a right and left footed combination at centre back to give a balanced defence.

The loss of Ian Knight our only other right footed centre back at the time.  What a player he looked.  That was a bit of a devastating blow to the team losing him to that horror assault by that Chester idiot.

Also talk of switching systems from 4 at the back and going back to a 5-2-3 (which was essentially a 3-4-3 with Sterland and Worthington pushed up at fullback/wingback). Pretty innovative of Wilkinson back in the mid 80s.

And I didn't know we had interest in Derek Mountfield.  And again evidence that our transfer budget just wasn't enough to go on and compete at the very top.

We could have had a centre back pairing of Mark Wright and Gary Pallister with Houghton and Snodin in midfield had Wilkinson been properly backed!

Always interesting what we find in old programmes about what did and didn't happen. Ian Knight was a very good player and no doubt was destined for a good career. The b/w photo is Ian Knight on his debut for us against Aston Villa on April 19th 1986. The other pic is of Ian Knight on his return to the first team at Coventry City on January 2nd 1989 which was his first game after the injury (assault).

In what way did he scrap it ?

He stopped supporting the Middlewood Jnr side that produced the likes of Sterland, Shirtliffe and Smith, without producing any new Youth system.

We only paid lip service to Youth for the next 30 years.

Didnt he start the clubs academy at the same time ....they perhaps  should have amalgamated middlewood into it to keep them on board   .

In fairness not a bad side but a bit weak at centrehalf and up front.

Losing Knight and MCCall to injuries didn’t help much.

After losing the Cup semi the previous season that summer the squad was certainly weakened rather than strengthened.

Sterland, Knight?, Pressman Hodge, Chapman, May, Madden,

(Esutace) Marwood, Megson, Worthington, Bradshaw, Shutt, Fee? (Smith)

Hirst, Chamberlain, (Wilko), Proctor, McCall

Thing the second one is Siggi Johnson rather than Knight

Looking back prices were ok but I remember at the time people were moaning and saying they were too high.

Looked at this the other month trying to work out from sort of 74 , 84, 94, etc and ticket prices have always been around 3-4 % of average weekly earnings.

Problem in Sheffield I suspect more and more people are earning less than average , doesn’t justify the silly prices Chansiri is charging though.
