Last one for tonight:

1999-2000

20/7/99 QPR 1-2 SWFC (Donnelly, own goal)

23/7/99 Peterborough 0-1 SWFC (De Bilde)

27/7/99 West Brom 1-2 SWFC (De Bilde, Alexanderson) - Testimonial for Raven)

29/7/99 Stockport County 0-1 SWFC (Donnelly)

31/7/99 Rotherham 0-1 SWFC (Carbone)

Wow, 5 wins out of 5. I think we might be on for a great season in 1999-2000.

🤔

Thank you sir

1998/99:

15/7/98 Reading 3-0 SWFC

17/7/98 Peterborough 1-2 SWFC (Booth, Magilton)

23/7/98 Man City 0-0 SWFC

25/7/98 Blackpool 1-0 SWFC

29/7/98 Lincoln City 0-3 SWFC (Booth, Di Canio, Atherton)

1/8/98 Birmingham 4-0 SWFC

3/8/98 Wasall 2-1 SWFC (Booth)

Also 3/8/98 Shrewsbury Town 1-0 SWFC - Shropshire Senior Cup.

18/5/98 Chesterfield 1-1 SWFC (Own Goal) - Testimonial for Hewitt.

Certainly our worst pre-season yet posted.

9 games against lower league opposition and only won two of them. Lost 5 of them.

I remember going to the Blackpool one, a red hot Saturday afternoon but an awful game and I recall wondering just how Di Canio could look so bad against 3rd division Blackpool (answer - he couldn't be arsed). Think Nigel Worthington was their manager.

Back for another update:

2020-21

15/7/00 Chesterfield 3

2-1 SWFC (Holmes)

17/7/00 Crawley Town 1-3 SWFC (Sibon, Cresswell, Humphries [pen])

19/7/00 Stevenage 0-3 SWFC (Sibon 2, Muller)

22/7/00 Wrexham 1-4 SWFC (Sibon 2 [1 pen], Booth, Hamshaw)

29/7/00 Scunthorpe 3-2 SWFC (Quinn, Jonk)

2/8/00 SWFC 2-2 PSV (De Bilde, Booth)

5/8/00 Brighton 2-0 SWFC.

Interesting note, the PSV was our first home friendly in seven years, with the previous being Worthington's Testimonial against Derby in 1993. Whilst we had been a Prem team throughout that period, and Prem the higher teams are usually away, 7 years without at friendly seems extreme.

Also interested as to who Holmes was. Looking at the player record in the same book, he never played a competitive game for us.

12/11/96 Merthyr Tydfil 0-3 SWFC (Blinker, Humphreys, Trustful.

I remember the Merthyr Tydfil game really well. As a 12 year old from South Wales it wasn’t always easy to get to watch games regularly but we went to this pre-season game.

There were a few kids like myself that got to go on the pitch before the game and do keepy uppies with some of the players like Pembridge and Blinker. All whilst wearing a Blinker wig. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Stuff of dreams for a 12 year old though.

I went that Alves match, think that was the year that had just been beaten by Liverpool in the UEFA cup final.

Boring game, but for years I have remembered it being a draw.

I was at that Alaves match too. Remember it hammering it down before the match and getting soaked on the way down.

Remember playing PSV 2-0 down & getting a 2-2 draw in 2000 Sure there was about 5 psv fans in the leppings lane or did I imagine this 🤷🏻

Remember that too 🙂

One of their players scored a class goal, and the Kop clapped it. Think it might have been Van Bommell

I remember we beat Newcastle 4-3, we were league 1 and they were PL. I thought wow we are going to be great this season!

The great Sir Bobby Robson (RIP) said afterwards that you get weird and wonderful results in pre-season and they don’t mean anything.  I thought booo you’re wrong Bobby. Sour grapes!

They went on to quality for the champions league,  we had our lowest finish in English football in most of our history.

I realised that pre-season results meant diddly squat from then onwards

Back already. Daughter's hay-fever is out of control so only managed to be out for about 45 minutes.

First of all, missed on from 1996-97

10/2/97 Shelbourne 3-2 SWFC (Booth 2)

1997-98

21/7/97 Exeter City 1-3 SWFC (Blinker 2  Hirst)

23/7/97 Torquay United 0-1 SWFC (Pembridge)

25/7/97 Plymouth 2-0 SWFC.

Then another (briefer) tour of the Netherlands:

29/7/97 Leiden Select XI 1-4 SWFC (Carbone 2, Donaldson 2)

1/8/97 T.O.P Oss 1-3 SWFC (Humphreys, Whittingham, Donaldson)

2/8/97 Sparta Rotterdam 2-1 SWFC (Pembridge)

4/8/97 Huddersfield 1-0 SWFC.

28/4/98 Rangers 2-2 SWFC (Carbone, Di Canio) - Testimonial for Ian Durrant.

Christ that Rangers trip was 24 years ago 😲

I remember that one. It was on a friday night and the game itself was more like a cup tie than a friendly.

The worst one I can remember watching was against Stoke in 2011. Padraig Amond played on trial. Ended 0-0 I think.

That match genuinely remains one of the best games I've ever been to.

Thought we'd absolutely smash the league that year.

A few weeks later, 2 0-0's against Stockport and Grimsby had me doubting my early optimism.

I don't recall us having a player called Watson at that time. He must have been a trialist
